Today was one of the most memorable days of my detecting life.
I only had about 3 hours of daylight so I went deep right away. After 3 or 4 minutes I got a crazy signal............. over loaded like a big can. I dig everything cuz who knows, it might be a Rolex. I dug a number of times and set my scoop aside with the load in it. I usually just keep digging until the sound is gone. The over loaded sound continued to I was tempted to move on. I don't know why, but I brought my scoop up to see if anything was in it.......... I swear on my Mother's grave that there were 7 pieces of jewelry (costume). Ear rings, bracelet and a coin or two............. WHAT? Still more sounds. I dug for about an hour within a 5' x 5' area!! A few pieces of gold, but mostly costume jewelry and about 20 coins. This must be one of those concentrations that I have heard about for 25 years but never found one or heard of someone finding one. So, then I thought............ If this is all of the light, larger area stuff, is there a spot where the gold is concentrated???? I moved out as deep as I could and immediately found an 18K ring. I will be going back at low tide again and see what happens, but time is running out............ I have to head back to Detroit Thurs ![]() I will post an image in about an hour. 1 18k ring and one marked 950 but since it is slightly corroided, it is probably not plat. 25 coins not shown ![]() Where would the heavy metal be? Deeper, shallow or ???????????? Chuck |

That sure is a lot of jewelry.... good job Chuck
I was dirt hunting grass strips at a beach I frequent a number of years ago... all over the surface of the grass I found 36 pieces of jewelry...1 piece of gold... my best guess was someone got robbed and the robbers were throwing stuff away heading to their car because it was in a line right towards a parking area... __________________ Last edited by Cfmct; 04-30-2012 at 07:49 PM. |

It might be the result of a robbery where they sit on the beach selecting what they think are the choice pieces and then getting rid of the other stuff by throwing it in the water but it was high tide and heavy stuff sinks, they might have thrown the gold thinking it was costume.
I know my wife likes to buy jewelry from auctions with costume jewelry in bags full and so often during yard sales you might find the old piece of gold but this i think is more likely to be the other way round, selecting the good from the bad and throwing the bad, the good tends to get melted down the sold off as gold, platinum and silver have no memory. Perhaps the bag was thrown into the water and simply it got opened by the water or ripped |

I would just go right back to that spot and search it again extra slowly and then start working my way out from there. I have found rings higher up the beach from heavy targets and lower so the only safe bet is to try and cover the entire area. When I hunted in Florida I found a pocket of fishing sinkers and heavy fishing jigs low in the wet sand. There was nothing else in that spot not even coins. After about an hour of digging sinkers I moved up the beach to the high tide line and found the ring in my avatar all by itself so it's real hard to say where the good stuff is. Judging by your finds your in the spot now just search it over and over and then over again! Good Luck!
I just looked over your pics again and my gut feeling is someone dumped them.Maybe like Craig's situation, some one stole a bunch of jewelry and they dumped it for whatever reason. The coins and old bottle caps go against that but I still think the jewelry was dumped fairly recently because the costume jewelry looks too good to have been there for a while. I would still keep searching there though considering you picked up a gold ring. Are the coins all nice and clean or have they been there for a while? Whatever the reason it's a great way to end your vacation. __________________ |
