Default Does your microwave cause your internet downloading to act funky???

I kid you not. We live 25 miles from the nearest town. I do not have cable/dish. So I download a lot of stuff from Youtube. American Pickers, Pawn Stars, Gunsmoke, etc.

My computer is in the kitchen and we have wireless internet, with the modem (or what have you) is downstairs.

Everything works great usually. But time and again, I'll be switching to another website or downloading something on YT and it will stall out while the microwave is running.

The second it shuts off it loads like nothing ever happened...

Anyone else experience this? I'm assuming the "microwaves" interfere with the "wireless waves"; but would like a "layman's terms" explaination if one is to be had.

Thanks,

NebTrac

Default Hey Neb...

Hey NebTrac...are you sure you didn't confuse the stove top popcorn with the microwavable popcorn again? You know...metal is not allowed in the nuker!

Seems plausible if some electromagnetic interference was occurring. If your microwave is old and has poor shielding this can make it worse. My understanding is that microwave operate at about 2.45GHz and your wifi operates at 2.4GHz. But it is also my understanding that with A/C current the microwave actually operates within a range of 2.45GHz the at some points it may match the exact frequency of your wireless internet causing destructive interference. Then your wifi must resend the info or patch it with error fixing code. Thus slowing it down. My suggestion is to buy a wireless router that operates at 5GHz. This will limit range slightly more than your 2.4GHz router but will not pick up interference.

Yup. I used to manage the IT department of a large-ish casino hotel. After we had installed wireless access points in the catwalks over the casino, we began to notice what seemed like random interruptions on the wireless network down on the casino floor. It took us a couple of weeks to track it down, but we finally determined that everytime they turned on one of the big microwave units up in the kitchen (one floor directly above one of the access points), we would lose the network, and as soon as the oven finished it's cycle, the network would come back.

We had to relocate the access point to resolve the problem. I imagine that the same solution would work for you.

HTH.

This makes the most sense, as the 'modem...or whatever' is about 13 feet straight down from the microwave. Thanks

Are you kidding us about living 25 miles from the nearest town?

Nope. Well I might fib a little. Anselmo is about 20 miles and has a population of around 100 or so. Sargent is about 22 miles away and has a pop. of 1,000 +/- and Broken Bow is our county seat is about 25 miles or so and has a population of close to 3000 people.

I love it.

I'm still trying to get NebTrac over to the "big city," we have 22,000 friendly folks in our town! He's just 75 miles away as the crow flies.
