We went to a property that was built in 1850, a couple of weeks ago.I had to get a new computer because my other one died, so I'm finally able to upload pictures of our first real find.
We had been to this property a few times. We have a used Bounty Hunter 505 (just ordered the AT Pro) We don't usually find more than clad, but we have fun. Imagine our surprise when this came out of the ground. I'm not sure of the value. Apparently there are two different types, from this year. The "WE" is still visable. It's very cool, to find the first coin that said "In God We Trust" as our first coin! Can anyone tell me if I can clean it, and how? I don't want to ruin the value, but it's pretty green. __________________ |

Very nice - yours is the large motto variety. I wouldn't clean it, it's got a nice patina, but that's me.

Sweet find.
Olive oil and a toothbrush is all I would suggest. You don't want to lose that nice green patina. __________________ |

Awesome! Don't clean it! It is perfect as is! You don't ever see high grade 2 cent pieces. That coin is EF40 on grade, and it is worth $23 in the 2012 blue book! Great job!

A 2 cent piece in any condition is cause for celebration. But, to find one in exceptional condition like yours just puts the icing on the cake. That coin was probably dropped when it was only a few years old before it had a chance to acquire much wear. I'm excited over here & I'm not even the one who found it. Congrats on a super sweet find. SUPER SWEET!!!

I have read over, and over, again, on this forum-not to clean old coins.
So, I figured I'd ask, anyway. I have not cleaned it. It was/is very exciting. It sure beats all the pennies we've pulled. It's hard to tell by the pictures, but all the lines are there. No plans to sell this one..... Do you think there would be silver there, since this was there? No luck yet on finding silver there, and we have dug many targets. __________________ |

Over the years, I have seen a dozen or so 2 centers. That one is in the best condition so far. Congratulations

Might be EF40 if not dug but the green patina is not it's natural color. But for being dug it's in great condition. Other than soap and water it needs nothing. Great find. I soooooo want to dig one.

Wow, great find. The WE is the first thing to go on those coins. The first two cent coin I found I ruined by trying to clean it. Besides using soap and hot water I would just leave well enough alone because it's in really good condition as is.

I've said it before on this forum and I'll say it again...for some reason those 2 cent pieces really seem to hold up better than other copper coins, I don't know why though. Personally I would take a toothpick and clean the loose dirt off (it shows brown in the pics) and that's all. It's a beauty of a coin, congrats. I have a theory that since the coin doesn't have any nicks in it corrosion hasn't had a chance to get 'into' or under the surface of the coin, thus allowing the green patina (verdigris) to build up and 'protect' the coin. Just a crazy theory.
