I just dug this today. When I first dug it, I dismissed it as a blazer button of some sort. I saw a bust but didn't really think I had something. when I got it home and cleaned it up, then google search. Turns out it's a Zachary Taylor 1848 ' Rough and Ready' button !! The wording is rough but with my loop it is legible. It's unfortunate that while it is a two piece, the back was iron. So basically the front is only thing left.

Really interesting find there. Can you tell me more about campaign buttons?

It's a presidential campaign button. It would've been handed out to drum up votes or show support for a candidate . Taylor would win be sworn in 1849, he died in 1850 in office.

nice find - the words are "rough and ready". this one is similar:

I found one last year in New Hampshire. Very cool.

Yours is slightly different than all the other ones.
The face
The border
