Eyeball-shaped Copper Object?

Me and my hunting buddy both found one of these last weekend. They appear to be copper and are about an inch across. My buddy's clearly says "PATD AUG.11.1903" on it.

Any idea of what these might be?

No clue. Without the patent mark, I would call it a eye from a sculpture.
