Two weeks ago I escorted my wife to the grocery. When she was picking up cat food and litter, I selected a box of medium sized Milkbone dog biscuits. My wife gave me the raised eyebrow look since we don’t have a dog. I merely said I needed it for metal detecting and she accepted the odd excuse with aplomb.

Today I arrived at a new permission that shows a lot of potential. As I was unloading my gear, 3 dogs across the street starting barking furiously from behind their fence. Soon an older lady stepped out on the porch and gave me what a friend calls “the stinky eye” and suspiciously started watching me.

I waved to her and said Good morning and then asked her ifI could give her pooches a dog biscuit. Suddenly she started smiling and gave me her consent. Soon her dogs were chomping down on their treats which not only shut them up but made us friends. Soon the lady walked towards and we started talking. I explained what I was doing and why. She started telling me the local history particularly about the property I was about to hunt and her own house. I kept feeding her doggies as she told me her stories. Of course I casually asked about hunting her yard and she readily agreed.

This is the third time this has happened so I’m sure I’m on to something good. Most people love their dogs and they like people who like their dogs. However I never give the dogs treats without asking and I think people appreciate that.

Nothing like pimping someone’s pet to get a permission....

Hope it pans out. I have a hard time asking but not much here. City is fairly new. Good tip about dog treat. hh

Check= Dog Biscuits, Cuban cigars in right breast pocket, just in case ya get a grumpy old guy, a flask in the left pocket for those that need to calm down, Doughnuts and a Thermos of Latte's for the Hipsters who just moved in to the Oldest home in the area, Kidding a little but you get my drift, sometimes you have to taylor make an asking permission moment.

Really what works for me is being genuine with people, I can Hunt any of the big ranches around me for ELK and metals with the exception of one who has active mines.

That was perfect Chip! People do like their dogs, and dogs sure are curious when they see a stranger, and dogs like treats.....If a persons dog likes you, then the person will too....for some reason, they will take their dogs word for it as a good judge of character!!...and yet a dog will sell its master down the river for a milkbone!

As a dog owner I can tell you that anyone my dog is ok with is ok by me for the time being. If my dog absolutely does not like you, I am leary of you. I am a dog magnet when detecting and I always pet and love up the dogs. I have had a few dog owners give me permission on their land as a result. Dog people trust dog people it seems.

Nice angle of approach :) Good idea and advice on the whole "asking permission before feeding the dogs thing" too. Heard stories of people poisoning dogs to later break in the house so I'm wary of anyone trying to feed my dogs.

Neighbors throwing bones to them when I don't usually give them bones is another peeve

Years ago I started finding bits of aluminum foil in my backyard. It was a mystery until I caught my back neighbor dropping a whole roast beef into my yard on a sheet of aluminum foil for Barney, my yellow lab. Seems she was a vegetarian but was buying and cooking meats for my lovable pooch. He was googling down whatever she slipped him and leaving bits of foil. But no doubt he was also swallowing foil too. I convinced her he would appreciate it as much if she simply dropped it on the ground.
I needn’t have worried. That mutt could and did eat EVERYTHING with no issues. He regularly would eat small barrel cacti. Those things had large sharp thorns but he just chewed them carefully. He lived to be 11.

I might have to use that.. I have an unopened box of dog treats. My Cur dog died this year and I can out them to use now.

Lol nice. Surprised your dog still ate anything out of the bowl if he was getting fresh roast beef :D

Wow cacti huh :) I thought my dogs were bad, munching on avocados which rank pretty high on most of the dog toxicity lists, but just found a few sites saying they might actually be good for your dogs
