Coinstar Machines

DO you just check the bottom or is that something you have to lift up or look at?
thanks

I'm a meat cutter for a big chain here in the west and we have a cion star and you can just guess what I'll be checking every morning. Thanks for the tip.

I only look on the reject slot, never using a coinstar is there a lid you lift up? There is a lid you can lift at the bank public coin counting machine. Found 15 cents(clad) that was stuck inside of it the few times I used it..

Some guy left some cents that were rejected on top of the coinstar yesterday so I had a looksie. There was a pretty beat up 1928-D wheatie and a plastic school money cent, the other couple of cents were beat up memorials so I just let them be.

I check mine everytime I am at the store. So far my girlfriend and I found 1 wheat penny, tokens, and some plastic change.

Also you might want to give a look under the edge of the machines, as people drop coins and don't even bother to pick them up. Have found a few coins in Clad this way.

No silver for me out of one yet though.

I just recently hit the local Coinstar machine. I unloaded $150 worth of the darkest, dirtiest, oxidized coins and was glad to pay the 8.7% charge. The more I thought about buying a tumbler, compound and spending time cleaning a bunch of coins the more the machine made sense. It only rejected 3 coins, and that was because they were nicked or bent. Every rejected coin caused a bell to ding and made a clink when it hit the reject cup, like a casino slot machine. So you would have to be brain dead or just not interested to not notice. However, I have yet to find any coins left behind. I wonder what they do with those corroded coins?

I love the Coinstar! I am too busy to sit and roll coins, and I did buy my own a few years back but didn't buy a good one. One of those $20 jobs from Lillian Vernon. It would jam so much it was frustrating and not worth the trouble. Our Coinstar is near the pharmacy, and more than once I've stood there waiting and watched the kiddies check the money slot. It's right at their eye level and curiosity always wins out.

I found 3 silver rosies, all at different times over the past year. Gotta admit i havn't looked in a while but seeing that merc just gave me motivation to start checking it out again.

Toll Booths

Many of the older toll booths in Orlando have "bad coin" returns as well. Guess what kind of coins they like to spit out? Yup. I have 4 silver quarters and 2 silver dimes. I'm hitting the coin stars tomorrow.

Thanks for the tip Tony.

Holy Coinstar!!!

The other day I peeked in the reject bin as I walked by, found a 1952 dime. Cool. Sale on Coke this week. There was a lady by the machine renting a video. I didn't want to seem like a beggar. Took a peek. Looked like the bin was full! So I get a little closer. yup, it's full of something. So I dig out a quarter, Silver, then another, and another and a dime, all silver. I grabbed the bag by the machine and grabbed the whole lot.

All told...49 silver quarters 1942-64, 66 silver dimes 1935-64, 2 1976 quarters, about 10 steel cents, and bunch of Canadian, including a silver dime. And some other foreign coins.

That's $18.85 US silver, which is worth about $177.19 by my calculations.
Beats all my MD finds in 20 seconds flat. I just may find gold in there one day!

I check them regularly and havent found anything. I used to work in a restaurant and you better believe I would find wheats and silver rosies. All told after 2 years I found 6 silver rosies, about 100 wheats, and a merc. I neve did find a silver quarter. Yall should just casually ask the person working the register if they have found any weird coins. We would regularly put the foreign coins in the side pocket of the register and they would sit there for weeks until I would exchange them for some of my tip change.

Well, no silver yet for 2008 but while taking a peek today it looked like someone hit a jackpot and forgot to collect

17 dimes and 20 cents all in the reject slot. Not a silver nor wheatie, but some easy clad at least. How can you not hear that much go into the reject bin :?:

First look pays off...

Nothing major but there was a canadian quarter sitting right by the loading area. Some people still refer to it (canadian) as "funny money". In these times it's funny how anyone would pass on free coins. Or as I sometimes say when finding coins, "twenty five cents off your next purchase".

Back in the day we used to check payphones for change and one day I found this particular phone had a return flap that wouldn't budge. I knew it was loaded with coins and with a sound thump of my leatherman the coins went back up and in then were freed. Almost $10 in coins ! Days long gone.
