Hi all. I am getting ready to move to Kansas City ,KS.
Anyone in the area know of some old parks that are good spots?

Thanks.

Tons.
I lived in Overland Park for about 3 years and hunted so many I can't count them up.
You have a couple in Wyandotte County, some big ones are Loose, and Swope in Missouri, Antioch was always good to me and there are plenty in Johnson County Kansas but a favorite was the largest park in the state which is Shawnee Mission.
Big and beautiful.
I scooped up some relics, old coins, new coins and a lot of jewelry at so many of them...but I probably left you a few.

In 2013 I went on a quest for gold using mostly my F2 and ended up with these all from parks just to give you an idea of what they can hold.

photostudio_1512306714122.jpg

Great soil, great and easy digging and lots of targets of all kinds.

They have roads going everywhere.
If any street or freeway is filled with traffic there are a million more routes to take so even rush hour is almost a pleasure.
I have never seen a more logical way to move traffic around.

City Market is way cool, great baked goods and spices and produce is pretty cheap, plentiful and tasty since it is all grown local.

Ameristar Casino has one of the best buffets.

The winters are not all that harsh, the barbeque is the best but watch out for the wind.
40-60mph gusts are normal around there on many windy days.

We loved it there, my wife did anyway.
Me, I was not thrilled with having to shut down hunting in the coldest winter months for weeks but it is what it is.

Overland Park wants us to have permits but they are free for 5 years if you call them here
913-895-6390.

Olathe also has a free permit if you contact them online, I think.
If you have any problems registering call Olathe Parks/Rec at 913-971-8563

$6 per year for these parks, well worth it if you get it early since it only goes to Dec 31.
I hunted in several and found between $250 and $350 a year in clad so $6 ain't nothing.
They can and do check you at a lot of parks, not all the time but I have been asked for permits more than once so it is good to get and carry them.

Most other cities have no rules and let you dig except Prarie Villiage.
They let you swing but no digging allowed which I tried once and it was just too frustrating so I avoided that town.

One of the greatest clubs in the country is located there, MWAS.
Here is their site and they have a forum.

Great and friendly people, great meetings where we hunted and great prizes at the annual end of the year festivities.
Really enhanced my joy in the hobby when I was a member.

Have fun!

Digger 27: I can't think of a park in the entire USA that "let's" you "dig".

If walk in to ANY city parks dept. office, anywhere, and ask "Hi. Can I dig up the park please?" They are going to say "no".

Hello from the other side of the river, in Kansas City, Mo. There are quite a few members here in the Kansas City metro area. A few areas, like Lake Jacomo and I've been told Jackson County Parks & Rec require permits. Mo Dept of Conservation does not allow dirt hunting but does allow other hunting within season, with proper permits. Digger27 already posted a treasure trove of information. Any way, welcome to the area.

In Kansas they seem nice and polite so they do.
Says so on the permits for those few, other city officers have told me the same.
Then again I need er asked them in the exact words , "Can I please dig up your parks?".

I am a lot more tactful so in that one city they said no digging but I never got a no or was bothered in any other.

I'll bet you dollars to donuts, that if I went in there right now, walked up to the clerk at the front desk, and asked: "Hi. Can I dig holes in the park ?" That they would say "no "

Although I'm in CA, you wanna do an experiment where I will call and send them emails?

Don't get me wrong: I agree with you that there's scores of parks where the md'r is ignored (unless he was being a nuisance).

"Tactful " ? Or is that "mincing words " & being "less than forthcoming " about your actions ?

I hardly ever talked to anyone in the city offices, nobody says this guy should either.

I did talk to several rangers and police patrolling many parks in my time, though, they were all fine with it.
I dig nice holes and never lied about anything to anybody.

The one time I actually did go into a main office and ask for information was here where I live now at a very large state park.
The rules are you are only allowed to hunt the sand at a very small beach.
I went in to make sure and got to talk to the head ranger of the whole park.
Because I was calm and logical and told him the truth about the actual sizes of the holes I dig he ended up telling me he didn't really care where I dug as long as I didn't wreck up the park.
Because I asked on that one I went from only hunting a small patch of sand to now having close to 10,000 acres at my disposal.

Hi from Spring Hill KS (southwest of KC)!
Everything Digger27 said is true. Each year I get a Johnson County permit, a city of Olathe permit (I'll have to look into Overland Park), and a Paola city permit.

Shawnee Mission is a great park, large and scenic. And lots of black walnuts to pick up in season if you're into that (I am). The beach is under construction, so no hunting there right now.

The Kaw River has some interesting sandbars if you get there in the right conditions to get onto them. I have not been able to find regulations for or against hunting on the (non-private) land along the Kaw.

Lake Olathe has an old beach site that was grassed over a couple of years ago. Interesting finds, but they are deep. It also has a spillway off the dam that has granted me interesting runoff finds.

I'm a member of the NEK group above...great group, check us out. We have outings a few times a year.

Happy hunting, and please feel free to ask if you have questions!!

oh My Gosh That's Awesome You Lucky Person:wow::wow:

Sorry for the delayed response. I just got settled in at an apartment in Shawnee area. I appreciate all the great responses and look forward to hunting the area, once the weather gets better. I've got a few new coworkers here that have older homes and I working to gain permissions on their properties. I'm trying to convince my wife that we need to buy an older home of our own. Some nice historic homes on the market right now.

Mostly everything else you need to know about KC.

Finally, you need to get to know the terms.
They smoke and slow cook everything there, beef, pork, sausage and even fish.
The first thing I learned and the only thing I ever needed to know after is this.

"Burnt ends are flavorful pieces of meat cut from the point half of a smoked brisket. A traditional part of Kansas City barbecue, burnt ends are considered a delicacy in barbecue cooking. Either the entire brisket is cooked whole, then the point end removed and cooked further, or the point and flat are separated prior to cooking. Due to the higher fat content of the brisket point, it takes longer to fully cook to tender and render out fat and collagen. This longer cooking gave rise to the name "burnt ends". Sometimes when the flat is done, the point is returned to the smoker for further cooking. Some cooks re-season the point at this time.
Kansas City style burnt ends are usually served cubed with sauce either on top or on the side. A "proper" burnt end should display a modest amount of "bark" or char on at least one side. Burnt ends can be served alone (sometimes smothered in barbecue sauce) or in sandwiches, as well as in a variety of other dishes, including baked beans and gumbo."

Yea, it was 14 degrees yesterday morning but it is warming up because it was 18 degrees this morning.
Nice...real nice, if you are a polar bear!

I WISH the club here was even close to what yours is.
Me and a few buddies just get together when we can so we have our own club which is much more fun.

So sorry for the cold air that went past us, just couldn't stop it. You will warm up before we will.
