Now a few things to be careful of.

Beware of areas that have been registered as historic sites--you can get in trouble for digging there.

All property belongs to someone, you first have to determine whether it is public property, or private property. Even vacant lots belong to someone. Private property you will need to secure permission from the landowner to even be on the property, otherwise it is trespassing, which is a crime that you can be arrested and jailed for. Public property you have to determine whether metal detecting is prohibited or not--but don't go asking public bureaucrats---research and find out on your own. If you ask, you will likely get metal detecting banned from the location.

What part of the us are you in? I have access to a map database at the college campus I attend and I could surely help you find some spots.

I live on Fort Leonard Wood and they are always doing some sort of sidewalk or road repairs in the housing areas. But I hear horror stories of guys getting locked up for detecting here. Not worth the risk in my opinion. Hell, even had a LT get arrested for doing training with his Soldiers with mine detector gear in a baseball field on post becaue they said he was "detecting"

Fort lost in the woods, brings back some memories!

I've been having a ton of success using the old topographic maps on historicaerials.com . Found quite a few amazing spots with it. Also word of mouth from the old folks. Go to any McDonalds between 6-8 in the morning when the retired old men form up for free coffee and pick their brains, works like a charm and you'll often secure multiple permissions to hunt that way on the spot.

That sucks! I work on Ft. Meade and have permission to hunt from the Provost Marshall. Soooo much history here and never see anyone else swinging. Found a first for me here last week, an 1888 Liberty V Nickel around Eisenhowers old HQ.
