back say Superior quality. think the shank is a pressed in so post 1918 maybe. just not sure. he is in Civil war area and has found relics before. his eyesight is failing sadly and he cant read the fine writing near the center. he managed to send me the pix.

flipping the picture i saw MADE IN ENGLAND in center. hard to read.
 
thanks Rock Jock. i found a few more. for what i have seen the stars are merchant marine 4th class petty officer or midshipman, something like that. still the age. some research on back, the shank looks pressed so 19th century at least. a lot say Superior quality . it does say faintly made in England, which is button capital of the world i think.
 
thanks folks. i do believe it is merchant marine. button books are quite expensive so been scouring the used book store chains for a reasonable one. but i know it takes several different ones for accurate ID there are so many buttons.
