Hey folks, with several inches of snow on the ground already, and lots more to come in the next few days. Yay Lake Erie lol!!! And highs in the 20's or lower for at least the next 6 days, this will probably be my last detecting post for quite a while. The ground should be frozen by then and who knows how much snow will be on the ground, thanks to stupid annoying lake effect! Anyway we had one more quick thaw earlier this week, which thawed out the ground temporarily, but I had a small time frame to take advantage of that. Tuesday was a cloudy low 40's day, but raining all day, with near an inch of rain expected, until lake effect snow, and below freezing temps return on Wednesday, and freezing temps at the most in the 20's for highs, for the next week or so . Yes, to those from other areas, this is what weather is like here in Western NY. I don't suggest moving here, the weather is terrible . I had to take advantage of those two days, so Tuesday I went with my buddy Pat, and we dressed in rain gear, and I wrapped my machine in duct tape, to make it water proof. It was a muddy, ugly, and dirty hunt, but we tried two areas that don't get hunted often. These are areas in a turn of the century park. About 80 percent of this park is pounded, but there are few areas, without giving out too much detail, where all the cherry pickers, are afraid to touch. Well guess what, it's rainy, wet, and cold, if somebody has a problem with me being in this certain area of a PUBLIC park, well, just come and tell me. And just as I thought, I had no problems at all, as a matter of fact, the parks guys have been really nice to us, and even waved to my buddy. I think maybe, they see how neat we are, and they appreciate our efforts to keep the place neat. Others in the past haven't been as kind, and I still pick up left over dug trash from a few of these people sometimes, that were too lazy or ignorant to pick up their trash. Anyway my first good signal of the day was a nice squeaker at about 6 to 7 inches deep, and right in the plug sat an 1894 O Barber half! Not a bad start to this hunt! After re scanning the plug again, I found a 1919 Merc off to the side of it. After digging several more Mercs in this hunt, I went to another spot in the park in an area that doesn't get hunted much. This turned out to be a great idea. Boom! Another Barber half, at about 6 inches deep, a 1900, with a little more detail on it. And then believe it or not, about 20 to 30 feet or so away from that, I got another slamming signal, and, at about maybe 6 to 7 inches again, I see another big silver rim. A 1918 D Walker, with a bit of detail on it as well. This is my first hunt ever where I have found three big silvers in one hunt. It's takes a special site to accomplish a hunt like this. Public sites like this are extremely rare in this era, but believe me, they are still out there somewhere! I ended this hunt with seven Mercs, three big silvers, and also a Hotel Vendone token. Now after dropping my buddy off home, and thinking about this site, I thought of going the next day in the freezing temps. I dressed super warm with multiple pants on, multiple socks, a scarf, winter coat, double gloves, etc. I was prepared to hit this site again, before the lake effect snow gets organized and buries us in a foot of snow, then I won't be able to go back for a while. So I toughed it out, and braved a single digit wind chill, and some on and off lake effect, cold temps, and a damp soaked ground, from the day before. I'm glad I did because I dug 6 more silver dimes, 4 Mercs, two Barbers, a 1912 George V Canadian dime, and Walker spill! Two Walking Liberty halfs, 1942 and 1944, that were lost with a Wheat penny. This is just my second silver half spill ever! So 5 silver halfs in two hunts, awesome stuff! And now I can end my hunting on a good note as the lake effect is falling hard right now as I speak, with a half a foot on the ground already :lotsasnow:. I also found an 1895 V nickel, and a sterling WWII Army Navy Production Award pin on the second hunt also. I would have loved to have some in the dirt or in the mud pics for you guys, but these two hunts were so ugly and muddy, I didn't want to pull out my phone lol. Well I hope you enjoyed the pics, to those who have read my story, thank you very much, and stay warm and HH Everyone! :)

What an amazing and fantastic way to start the new year Ron. Congrats on all the Halves and all the rest. Hope when Spring comes it allows you to go back with much better conditions. Jack

Wow!!!!!! I can't imagine having a hunt like that on public ground. Full of envy here in poor Tennessee, lol

Awesome hunts there! I'm curious, though you may not want to answer this....why do you think other people skip over the areas you were hunting? Terrain? Trash? Iron?

I'm asking because I made a couple of fantastic finds near pounded areas last year just over the lip of a plateau area...had been hammered, but all those guys didn't want to go over onto the steep slopes below.
