Bale Seal?

Hey everyone. You guys have been so great helping me out. I am new to detecting so I really appreciate it! I tried doing some research and I thought this could be a bale seal but the ones I looked up don't have just numbers on it. All I see is 57 on this one and nothing on the back. It is the same size as a dime. Any thoughts or ideas would be awesome. Thanks!

It looks like a seal, but to be sure, you should be able to see a little rust where the two wires came out.

Thanks duggap. Any idea what the 57 could have stood for? Also any ideas on cleaning? I know they are very fragile.

Take a look at this site. Seals have been around since the 13th century. I think they are sort of a neat find.

Wow great site! I appreciate the resource. Your right it is very interesting the history behind them. I am going to bring it to my historical society and maybe they can find more info and display it.

looks like one to me. Some of them that we find around here have the initials of the railroad, or a company on them. Nice job!
