On July 22nd. I had the opportunity to help a woman on Long Island recover a very valuable diamond engagement ring that was lost in the water for a week.
While visiting the local White's dealer (Treasures Unlimited) a call came in requesting assistance in finding a lost ring. The owner, Mike McMeekin asked me if I wanted to go back to Jones Beach and try to find the couple's lost ring.
I agreed and met the couple at the beach. As luck will have it, I was able to find it a few feet below the high tide line within a couple of minutes at low tide.

I am posting the newspaper article if anyone would like to read the story. I'm also posting a couple of pictures of the woman and the ring.

Way to go Joe!! Very happy lady and great story. That's one heck of a ring as well. Just love the return stories.

Outstanding! Amazing recovery and against all odds being lost for that amount of time!...Sheesh...Everything aligned up just right here! You were the right man for the Job there Joe! Well done! Great pics and write up! Thanks!

Thanks everyone. I'm glad it had a happy ending. As you know in these situations, it doesn't always turn out good. Luck was definitely on my side that day.

Great story! You've earned your ring return wings! Many folks don't realize there is a whole MD community out there, with good people eager to help find lost jewelry or other metal objects. Good going Joe!

Awesome job! Really cool story. This is just a question of curiosity, but for those of you who have had the fortunate experience of finding and returning a valuable ring, do you typically get a reward offered to you? Not trying to be a materialistic weasel. I am just curious how it typically goes down. I know if I lost an expensive item and it was found, someone is getting a steak dinner or gift card. End of story.

Nice save man good for youđź‘Ť....She got very lucky that clunker didn't sink out of detector range. Thats the kinda ring that makes a heart skip a beat if you seen it in your scoop:wow:

Spot on!! We need more good PR so people don't think we are just...:pirate:

Each return is different, some say thanks, others offer a reward...or some take the item and don't say thanks, which is what happened to me when I returned a WW2 dog tag to a deceased soldiers daughter. She didn't even say thanks...lol

But typically, reward etc is decided on before the actual hunt, most of us would return the ring without asking for a reward.

In many instances a guy will agree to look if gas is paid for if they travelled a long distance, but again, each return / search is different.

Hey Joe congrats on the outstanding recovery. When I saw it on News 12 I immediately knew it was going to be you who found it.

When I spoke to the woman on the phone she asked how much I charge. I told her I don't charge anyone to look for it. She insisted that I get something for looking for it. In the end I accepted $60.

I was using the stock 950 coil so yes, that thought was on my mind. My
Dualfield PI machine was out of commission so I had to just go with what I had. It wasn't in my scoop. I took out a full scoop and it was laying in the hole.

Thanks John. It wasn't my first recovery. Just my 1st valuable ring recovery.
Do you still hunt at Jones Beach? I know you used to hunt Field 6, but I don't usually work there. So I probably missed you all these years and yes it's been years since I've last seen you.
