I got permission to hunt an old 1830’s house. The owner said there was nothing there as it had been hunted 7 different times, but she said that if I wanted to waste my time, then have at it.

I filled my find bag with odds and ends and a first for me...pardon the bad pics.

A big congrats on finding your first V Nickel !

Seen it many times ... when I get to site has been hunted heavily in the past -
I really start paying closer attention to Nickel signals.
This can really result in some good very finds because a lot of people are only digging the higher conductors - like Silver !

Example -
I hunted an old ball field last year an I didn't find any Indians, Wheat's or Dime's but I did leave with three Buffalo Nickels and a Silver War Nickel.

Good Hunting !

Nice find, Sfn01! Congrats on the first of hopefully many more! I love finding V nickels - they really aren’t a common find. Plus, to me, they ooze age - the coin’s design coupled with the unique “rusty” patina leaves no doubt that it’s from a different era for anyone who sees or holds it. Some folks don’t like finding nickels because their unique corrosion doesn’t “clean” well, but I love the older ones - the corrosion just adds to their history!

Dead on, E-TRAC! Nickel signals definitely get overlooked, and I’ve found many in local parks that have obviously been hunted hard in the past. But I’ve also had a lot of luck finding Indians in the same old parks - I’m guessing previous cherry-pickers and perhaps less experienced detectorists are skipping or discriminating out zinc penny signals and lower, which of course also knocks out Indians.

I’ve dug a lot of v nickels and I’ve never had the luxury of digging one that even remotely still has any silver toning left. Usually can’t even get the date off them. Nice find!
