Just purchased a new Garrett AT PRO. Any tips for a good smooth start?
Since you already are experienced with a BH, I would jump straight to pro zero. Don't max out sensitivity, I normally run 3 bars down.

Any setting that doesn't discriminate out anything above 45 or so, depending on how large the ring is. I've been beeping the AT Max for about 7 months and have found 4 gold rings so far. They ranged from 49 to 61 on the VDI, all signals I wouldn't dig in the first several months that I was detecting. So if you want to find a missing gold ring what is the best setting?

You have to dig every signal above 50...not every solid signal above 50...every signal above 50. I dug a nice, but plain, 14k wedding band recently that was jumpy from 53 up into the 70s. I found the ring first, got excited after cleaning it off and seeing the hallmark, and flipped the plug back into the hole. Rescanning, there was a squashed 1/2 of an aluminum can about 2 inches under where I found the ring, which was kicking the jumpy signal up out of the 50s.
You will dig a ton of trash using that strategy, I promise. But finding just one gold ring will make it worthwhile.
Definitely use Pro zero and listen to the tones...they make a huge difference. Set your iron disc to about 30 or so (it's what I do at least) to filter out a lot of the iron.
Dig as much as you can reasonably do, and make sure you remember the tones.
