Two weeks ago I escorted my wife to the grocery. When she was picking up cat food and litter, I selected a box of medium sized Milkbone dog biscuits. My wife gave me the raised eyebrow look since we don’t have a dog. I merely said I needed it for metal detecting and she accepted the odd excuse with aplomb.
Today I arrived at a new permission that shows a lot of potential. As I was unloading my gear, 3 dogs across the street starting barking furiously from behind their fence. Soon an older lady stepped out on the porch and gave me what a friend calls “the stinky eye” and suspiciously started watching me.
I waved to her and said Good morning and then asked her ifI could give her pooches a dog biscuit. Suddenly she started smiling and gave me her consent. Soon her dogs were chomping down on their treats which not only shut them up but made us friends. Soon the lady walked towards and we started talking. I explained what I was doing and why. She started telling me the local history particularly about the property I was about to hunt and her own house. I kept feeding her doggies as she told me her stories. Of course I casually asked about hunting her yard and she readily agreed.
This is the third time this has happened so I’m sure I’m on to something good. Most people love their dogs and they like people who like their dogs. However I never give the dogs treats without asking and I think people appreciate that.
Nothing like pimping someone’s pet to get a permission....
