Thinking about joining the gang in treasure hunting. Any advice as to searching in the Bahamas? Authorities okay or would I need to register with them? Thank you.

Nassau is cool with it. I sent an email to the department of tourism and the local police chief. Response from both said there are plenty of public beach areas and it is completely legal.

There is a post from May 2011 called "Can I detect the Bahamas?" Search Bahamas under posts. The thread said you can detect beaches that are at port if you are on a cruise. Also said that Carnival cruises allows metal detectors, but not to detect on the ship. What ever that is. Also said a guy got 7 years in prison for metal detecting a sunken ship in the Bahamas. Are you flying yourself or going as part of a cruise?

Check out the travel.state.gov website. Couldn't find any info on metal detecting though.

Good thread with advice:

Posted by anonymous: No metal detecting is not allowed in the Bahamas. It is an offense punishable by 7 years in jail and the lost of your passport.

quote:The rules for detecting in the Bahamas are similar to Bermuda. Be respectful of the other beach goers and no problems. I've attached a copy of a letter from another surf pirate who detected in the Bahamas. Bear in mind that just because there is no law against detecting doesn't mean you won't get hassled if you run into the wrong sort of lifeguard or policeman, etc. Islanders have a way of doing there own thing sometimes, regardless of the laws.

Bahamas Gold
By George Streeter
Accompanying me to the Bahamas were Bryan Llewelyn of Wales, Charlie Anderson of Port St Lucie, FL, Gale Hopkins, Ashuelot, NH, & Donald Foster, Claremont, NH.

"We traveled in hurricane seasons (September 2008) hoping to find some beaches depleted of sand. We detected local, public, resort & forgotten beaches and had a great time competing for the best & most finds. Luck was with us, we all found gold & some of us found some fantastic finds...
In a week’s time we found 20+ pieces of gold & some of it, were find's of a lifetime. I was amazed at how much gold could be found on an island this close to the USA. I was under the impression, because if it was easily accessible, it would be hunted to death. Maybe it was hunted to death & we were just lucky.. I found the heaviest piece of 10K gold jewelry, I’ve ever found, 42.1 grams. At today’s prices, it’s worth $500+. Other beaches we checked out, were: Saunders, Atlantis, Cabbage, Cable, Fort Montagu, Western Esplanade, Orange Hill, Caves, Jaws, Adelaide, and Sandals. We enjoyed the Bahamas will return again for another fun & successful metal detecting vacation."

Looks like it could go either way. A friend of mine just got back from the Bahamas and said he didn't have a problem. It was when he was leaving and going back threw customs they confiscated his batteries.
Good luck!

Sounds like Mexico, the beach and shallow water are fine, but don't go digging on wrecks without serious permission from the gov....
