I am new to metal detecting and I am looking to get my first detector this week. I cannot decide where or what to buy. I have looked at and highly considered the Ace 400, but then I have also seen the whites coinmaster and the new teknetics liberator or patriot. Any input to help me decide is greatly appreciated. I literally have 2 fields and a house waiting and I am getting antsy.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of a good pin pointer.
After trying one out I found it to be a necessity.

I spent the last few years with a Fisher F70...and the Patriot is an F70 just at a much lower price.

Major power, tons of adjustments and settings, it has conquered every site I have taken it too and every condition I have come across.
My first few months with it and what I learned and found along the way here...

Listen to him! I would second the fact of getting a good pin pointer! I started with out one, then got a cheap one and finally got a good pin pointer my enjoyment went up 100%.

Patriot is a great machine, also don't count out Tesoro machines they are awesome beep and dig. Not as overwhelming with VDI #s and this setting and that settings.

I do this hobby to have fun and keeping it simple and pulling up good targets are fun!

Also don't be afread to buy a used machne. I have from several persons here and always been happy. check the sellers feed back and then do a little dickering, sponsers here will work with most folks if ya give them a call.

PS welcome to FMDF

Agree with the above. Definitely get a good pinpointer. Also, if you think you'll like this hobby push your budget and get a detector that will last. To upgrade in a years time ( like I did) is a waste of money. I think the Patriot would be a great buy. If you can stretch, the ATP, T2, or the F75. As said above used can save a lot of money.

Looking around I can get the patriot and the deteknix xpointer for 400 even after a discount code. I'm not sure how their pinpointer is but that doesn't seem like a bad deal to me.

+1 the patriot would be a great choice.

I started with an Ace and upgraded in a year.

If I had to do it all over again at this point in time, I'd start with a T2 Classic, or possibly the Patriot.

Both are a great value at their current price and you can spend a few years learning and using them without needing to upgrade.

I upgraded from the Ace to a Racer 2 and LOVE it, but it's not in the price range that you mentioned.

Thank you all for the responses and for the info. As of right now I have settled on the teknetics patriot due to the prices and that it comes with a free pinpointer. I can't wait to get out and get started.

If you are serious about metal detecting save yourself money down the road and go with White's V3i.....a lot of folks shy away from it but remember you get what you pay for.........

Good choice, three years in with this thing and I believe I have barely touched the surface of what it is actually capable of.
Read that log of mine in the link, it can help cut down the initial learning curve quickly.
I am REVIER over on Findmall.
I have a ton of posts about settings I have tried and what resulted plus many of us Fisher guys share settings, tips and technical advice all the time over there.

We have an F70 social group here...the Patriot is the same thing and more to learn and a place to share here also.

Sounds good to me and thank you for the links. I'll get to reading those after I feed the kids and get them to bed.
