Hi everyone,
Well I thought I would add something here and if you like the idea of treasure hunting, you can read about your own State or nearby States. You may like to read about some of the lost treasures in your areas. For you dreamers this may be something your interested in. And for the person that has plenty of time and really is into researching history. You might get a kick out of some of these old Treasure stories so you can research. I enjoyed reading about lost Treasures when I was a kid, maybe your kids would too.

Remember, if you plan to actually search for any of these Treasures, a few are possibly just stories, some have actual facts and others may have been found long ago and never reported.

I'm putting up two sites that contain Lost Treasures from every State and other sites for individual States and Misc. info. you might be able to use. Most give very little information on the stories themselves and even less facts. Old news papers, libraries and the Net may also help you with finding more evidence that there was a Treasure. Remember each page or site or story you read, has the possibility of giving you more info. on a specific subject or treasure you are looking for. I also added a couple of sites for locating natural Gems. Sorry if any of the sites are under construction.

Though these sites give little information, I added them so you can go by either the geographical area or the name of the person(s) that stole or hid the loot or treasure. Or the name they gave for the Treasure in question. It will be up to you to research and find more information about the stories and treasures themselves. More finds World wide, were found through sheer dumb luck than you could ever imagine.

Remember also, approximately $500,000,000.00 in treasure has been found in the Atlantic. Yet there is over $4,000,000,000.00 in buried treasure in the United States.

I'm adding Treasure stories and also sites and pages that may explain how to go about looking for buried Treasure and stolen loot. And sites that may give you more ideas where to look, plus where to find old maps. I also added a couple of stories where someone has FOUND treasure also. Almost each week I add more sites/pages to the top or bottom of the list below. Sorry it's not in very good order.

Hey Payloadjim --

Nice collections. I looked at the first one. I've got one small correction for where you have placed one of the legends on the losttreasureusa site. Under Connecticut, your last listing regarding Conanicut Island actually should be listed under Rhode Island. While it certainly looks like a variation of Connecticut, it's actually the name for the island that is adjacent/connected to Jamestown, Rhode Island (near Newport). Most people refer to it as Beavertail these days.
Rich

Hmmm I'll let em know. I know little about back east. Though I have traveled all over.

Thanks. A couple of these Iowa stories are in my county.

If your new and need areas to Metal detect, here are some ideas.

Happy hunting and good luck on your metal detecting adventures!

4.Fairgrounds
5.Picnic Areas
6.Recreational Vehicle Parks
7.Amusement Parks
8.Carnival Sites

10.Seaside Beaches
11.Sand, Dirt or Grassy Parking Areas
12.Old Home Sites

13.Old School Sites

New Suggestions:

Abandoned Areas:
Where I live there are two trailer parks that have been here for 50 to 75 years. Developers bought the property and the trailers will all be gone or abandoned soon. Looking forward to searching them.

Also drive out of the city to the country and look for the remains of old houses, barns or whatever looks empty and run down. Great places to detect.

Winter Sledding Spots:
One place I always go back to is where folks go sledding in the winter. Some of these areas have been used for generations. The most targets are at the top and the bottom of the hill.

Ice Cream Truck Route:
Everybody has an ice cream man/woman who drives their noisy truck thru the area, watch to see where his regular stops are and search there!! KIDS+POCKETS FULL OF CHANGE+ TOTAL DISTRACTION TO GET ICE CREAM= LOTS OF COINS ON THE GROUND!! Happy Hunting!!

Old Railroad Rail Lines:
The country is crisscrossed with old and abandoned railroad railroad line. Many abandoned rail beds have been converted to "Rails-to-Trail" hiking, horseback riding, and bicycling trails and are easy to find. Others are overgrown but can be spotted by their constant-grade profile. Old maps in your state library will show the location of many old railroad lines. Once located, and permission to prospect is granted, begin your search in the areas around the old station buildings. These are the most productive area as coins were handled there. But under no circumstance should you approach active railroad lines because of the obvious danger from trains and the sensitivity of railroad police to intruders -- this is especially true since 9/11. Please use good judgement when metal detecting for everyone's sake.

Rivers and Waterways:
Many towns, villages and cities throughout North America boast significant historical value. Do not overlook the shoreline along rivers and waterways adjacent to those communities. Since water routes were the major means of travel over past centuries, there is much to find along the banks. I have found everything from old money to firearms, native trinkets, metal money boxes (sometimes with contents intact), fobs, watches and even nagivational instruments. Don't forget to search out into the water a ways. This is where it is important to own a waterproof detector. The past is waiting to be discovered right in your own community.

City Drains:
Most cities have storm drains that eventually dump into rivers or streams. Where the concrete ends and the dirt or gravel begins has been a productive site for me.
Grassy Areas:
Another suggestion would also be old telephone booths, especially ones that are located with some grassy areas around them. Municipal swimming pools that also have grass
around them. About anywhere that there are grassy areas is a good place to look. People lose money, and jewelry in the grass and cannot find it

Bus Stops / Roadside:
Roadside yardsales…gonna go hit one today. Every Sunday they set up along a main road and the crowds roll in. Bus stops. Places where summer outside movies are shown on the side of buildings.
Airport Public Viewing Areas:
I have a suggestion for a location. Airport public viewing areas. I have found all kinds of coins at these locations. People sit on the grass and kids are playing as they wait for the planes to land or take off - losing all kinds of change and rings.

I copied this from KellyCo. pages.

And another list I found also.

Do not expect to find lots of treasure every time you metal detect. In fact, there may be times when you come back home empty-handed. But the real joy of this wonderful hobby is never knowing what you are going to dig up next!

In the past, many finds were taken away. Usually those were off the coast of Florida from old ship wrecks. And due to the fact that European Insurance Companies were and are still around and in business from hundreds of years ago. They still wanted their "money back" so to speak. They have changed their rules a bit now. I am sure they want a portion if found, but not all. My guess if they insured something for $40,000.00 they get the $40,000.00 back, plus some interest or % of the recovery. Even if it's worth ten million by now. (Not sure if I am right though). I say this because I know for a fact that private investors are receiving a percentage of the treasures once found. State side can have the same rules. But it has to be proven that it came from a specific theft. Recently a man around Phoenix Arizona died with over 7 million dollars in gold bars left in his home. (Where did they come from)? Point is, they went to his next of kin. Another old man, cousin I believe... back East. I personally would take my find and sell it without bragging about it to the news stations. A huge find around the late 1800's or early 1900's near Phoenix Arizona, I believe. A couple hiking through the desert, one of them fell into a hole in the ground. They widened the hole and found, hundreds if not thousands of Spanish gold bars in what was an old cave. Foolishly they went to town and bragged about it. Held for questioning by the Government, Soldiers went and removed all the gold. They received NOTHING! This sort of thing use to happen often. New laws have been established and people do receive a portion or a finders fee depending on if it was stolen, insured etc.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"what happens if u find a gold bar, does the goverment take it from you or what"

Only if you tell them about it.

I got a free cd from Kellyco when I first started. I was on their website looking at stuff and an ad came on saying I had won!!!! :dingding: Put my address in the form online and a short 8-10 wks. later it showed up in my mailbox. Looks like it comes free with some detectors but I couldn't find it on their website. Some really awesome stories, legends, maps etc. on there though. Maybe visit their website 100 times a day and roll the dice?

Your lucky, I am not lucky in drawings. But I should check KellyCo. out anyway, Ya never know.......

Glad to see a lot of people have viewed this thread. It took me hours to find all the pages and sites to add on here. I even found a lost treasure story about this small town I live in, in Arizona. With my luck, it's worth a Million dollars by now but the Court House is built over it!
