I am new to metal detecting and have been learning my at max at a town beach finding coins and pull tabs along the way. I remembered seeing a box of coins that were in the attic and wanted to see if there were any old coins. I found quite a few mercs and foreign coins but the 1878 silver dollar was the oldest. I read that there were several different versions of it and was wondering if anyone can tell me more about this coin.

In addition to the tail feather variations there are also coins struck at different mints. No letter under the tail feathers means it was minted in Philadelphia. An S means San Francisco and a CC means Carson City. The CC version is worth more than the other mints.

Welcome! And....any chance I can come dig around in your attic? LOL. That's a nice coin, get a cover for it and display it!

Thanks Whirly, I'm going to get a cover for it. You are more then welcome to dig around the attic as long as you take all the junk that is up there, I'm not looking forward to cleaning it out LOL.
