The weather here has been mild the last couple of days but the ground has been harder than a grizzlies d--k. I remembered a tip from cellrdwller about sticking to the woods put me in mind of an old ruins in the woods that maps show a structure as far back as the 1870s. Last time I was there I could hardly hold a thresehold on the Etrac. I was able to dig a few wheaties but not much more. After not being able to hunt for a couple of weeks the thought of digging a couple of wheaties sounded pretty good. I did dig my first wheatie of the year and two memorial pennies. Also a horseshoe token, bent in half, with no coin inside I didn't think much at the time. I've dug several of these from the 40s and most were in pretty bad shape. I soaked it over nite and when I went to straighten it it bent right back, most have cracked when I've tried that. Huh? After cleaning I noticed no corrosion, then I noticed a three digit phone #. I'm thinkin' this is old, I'm old and don't remember three digit #s. After a little google I find a time line 1892 to 1905. Huh? Wonder what kind of taxi he had ? A familiar ring at the drop, an ice test and I'm thinkin' I got my first silver of the year and a lucky horseshoe to boot. Now I have to go back and try to find the penny, probably an IH that was in it. What a nice surprise from the trash pouch. So, first hunt, lucky horseshoe, pretty sure silver, a wheatie, hope its a sign of good things to come. HH Mark Update, after a little more research I come to find its not as old as I first thought. Business records show is was registered in Sept. 1944. I guess if you had a three digit phone # back then you weren't required to update. Still, first cool find of the year.
