A few weeks ago I got a permission where a restaurant was razed. Before that a 2 story house had stood. Before that who knows.
The lot is very full of metallic trash. The owners originally refused me access. But we talked a bit and I asked what their plans for the property were and they are putting in a miniature golf course. I stood silently for a minute after hearing that and quietly asked “ Wouldn’t you WANT somebody to remove some of the trash that’s buried in the ground? It can be a safety hazard especially for kids to have it there. “
They quickly reconsidered and gave me their blessing. And it’s been a real treat to hunt. I have harvested a couple hundred pounds of metal to sell at the recycling center and much is brass and copper.
But I’ve found a crazy mixture of finds. Among them have been: my first horse shoe. 3 axe heads, one is a broad axe. A .69 caliber Minie ball. A pocket knife a .38 pearl handled Saturday night special ( the knife, gun and a brass drawer pull were all in the same hole. The weapons were likely in a bedside night stand that burned up when the house did. )
And coins. An 1864 Indian head penny. An 1855 Seated Liberty Dime. A shield nickel. A Barber dime and 3 Mercs and a Roosevelt. A number of wheat pennies.
I went back 2 days ago and found a solitary Zincoln. Apparently the well had run dry.
But today I could not resist going back. I found a VERY deep Zincoln. Then a very crusty penny and what appeared to be a tiny button. And later I found what is an 1898 spark plug.
I went home and found the penny was a 1907 Indian Head. And I was studying the “ button” and realized it only had one hole. Further study showed the reverse side said “HALF DIME”. I carefully cleaned it and it’s a beautiful 1853 Half Dime.
