Mystery "splatter" on stone

Found this in a stream bed, in Virginia. It seems to be lead splatter (non-magnetic) but beyond that I'm lost. The area did see some Civil War action.

Any ideas/guesses are welcome. (Delighted to discover this resource)

That's interesting. I'd take that to a university and have a geology prof. look at it.
 
Possibly native copper still in the matrix? Maybe nick it with a small file to see if there's copper color. I know there were copper mines in Virginia, but don't know if it came in that form or just as ore.
 
I think it's simply an iron or pyrite concretion that's weathered out. That flower like object grows inside a softer material, sandstone, limestone etc and over eons, the softer material is eroded away.
Don't believe it's man made.
