I use them to conserve battery life and to heighten the sound of grunts and chirps i would miss by not using headphones.

I use them. I find that listening opposed to just hearing the different signals make a large difference in what I find.
I don't like some of the larger type, prefer the lighter versions. It's unnerving to have people come up on me without hearing them in advance.

Besides making your batteries last longer you will not annoy anybody with the sounds your detector makes. Im not sure about your particular detector but most lower end machines either beep or dont , you dont get "whisper" signals that you can only hear with headphones....but like I said I dont know about your particular detector.

Most all experienced MD users wear phones, even a $20 pair will be helpful.

Just got some BH headphones for my LoneStart. Can't get out yet to try them out, but I can say my first impression is not so good. If I were to do it over, I would buy a different brand. The BH is pretty cheesy for the price. JMHO
