Does anybody know how to go about getting a permit fir TVA property? I know you half to have one but I don't know if anybody who has gotten one. Also I wonder if it cost anything?

I was bummed when they took the permit application off the website. About 3 weeks ago I emailed the TVA police and asked permission about a particular site. Haven't heard back yet. Probably won't.

I am headed up to Douglas lake where I grew up today for Christmas. It's just about a mile away from the dam, there is sways a guard driving around up there I will ask him and post what I found out. They are usually pretty nice. I used to know a couple of the guards when I was a kid but they have since moved on.

The email I got back said

Thank you for your inquiry and I apologize for our delayed response. The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) manages public lands and natural and cultural resources across the region for the greatest public benefit. Included in this responsibility is protecting over 11,500 known sensitive archaeological sites as required by multiple federal laws including the Archeological Resources Protection Act. Activity permitted under the current metal detecting policy has resulted in damage to some of these protected resources.

TVA is reviewing its current practice of issuing permits for metal detection on TVA–managed lands and is also considering consistency with the practices of other federal agencies charged with protecting federal lands. In particular, the National Park Service does not allow the use of metal detecting devices on property they hold in trust for the citizens of the Unites States. Renewal or issuance of new permits for this activity on TVA-managed lands remains on hold until a decision has been made.

If you have any additional question, please contact me.

Thanks,

Erin

I received the same letter last spring with the same reply. To date I don't think anyone has MD the swimming area by Douglas Dam. At least I never saw any clue of a MD there and I went there almost every week.

Right now water is low there, and its a great time to try it, but without a permit I wouldn't.

Metal detecting is prohibited on TVA land.Permits are not issued anymore, and water hunting was one of my favorite types of hunting.
