I've had a lot of struggles with my CZ-21. I purchased it used on Craigslist from a guy in Florida who said it worked fine. It did not. I sent it in for repair, had to upgrade it, and have had it back to Fisher three or four more times to correct problems that it has had (coil water incursion at least twice, if not thrice). I sent it in a few weeks ago, after our Bahamas vacation where it falsed constantly, for what I swear is the last time. I received it back and it seems that they did replace the coil, again. So, wanting to test out the work that was done, I loaded the family into the car for a two hour drive to Stinson Beach, CA.

The road there is a windy one, and my youngest had a melt down while the eldest maintained a stiff upper lip (albeit with an unsettled stomach). When we arrived, it was too cold, the sand was too cold, there was no sunlight, the sand hurt their feet, ad nauseam... But once we settled down and started digging our way to Australia, all was well with the world. I tried my luck in a trough that was handily in front of us, but not a peep other than falsing. I was not happy with that, but swore I'd power through and try deeper water. Putting the coil into 4" and deeper seemed to kill the falsing. For some reason, this coil does not like salt water sloshing over the top, but immersed it seems to be fine. Unfortunately, my headphones were TOO quiet, and I elected to instead try my luck on a sand dune.

I was glad I did! On the way, I uncovered a couple of coin spills and eventually found this very nice and very delicate sterling bracelet (by Elsa Peretti, which is sold at Tiffany's) with my initial on it. I don't expect that I'll be wearing it, but fate does seem to want to tempt me...

All in all, this was a good outing, and I pulled a lot of potentially harmful trash off the beach in a short amount of time! I won't be convinced that my troubles are over, though, until I've had this beast in salty water a few more times.

Happy hunting!

I have the same problem but chaulk it up to it being a VLF machine. Does seem to chatter more sometimes than other times and being a bit paranoid I wonder if there's a problem.

Nice Hunt!

Happy you got to get a few goodies. I've never had water intrusion issues with the coil side but I have seen CZ falsing when detecting the surf, sometimes even when you swing and the coil skips over from the wet sand to the water. I always chalked this up to a ground balance issue with transitioning materials.

Splashing water on the coil top is the same issue. Thought this was maybe an issue with the coil wire bouncing on the lower rod, and sometimes tightening up the wraps would help but it never went away completely.

Thanks for your replies and encouragement on the CZ, guys. If the falsing in shallow surf is common, then I have no complaints with how it performed, yesterday. I can't wait to take it out, again!

I have asked Felix about this and still no solid answer.

HOW come EVERY TIME my CZ-21's go in for repair the coils are BAD?????

EVERY TIME.

I love my CZ's BUT this is happening way too much. All they are is coiled wire.

You HAVE to take their word for it also. I just got my CZ-21 and my CZ-20 which they made into a 21 back last week. BOTH coils were bad and the 21 was under warranty. HOWEVER, I have sent ones in numerous times and I get the same thing.

Something else was wrong but the coils are always bad.

I have the same issue when salt water splashing over the coil. Nothing is perfect and most likely due to the rapid changing conductivity within the coils VLF field. Remember, that field isn't just down into the sand. Its also extending out of the top of the coil where the water is sloshing about. No worries, it still out performs anything I've used before it. I've dug some small, deep gold with my CZ-21.

Glad to hear you worked through it......(My Excal II falses as well when in the shallow surf, when the sens. is running hot. Not really sure why, but the finds it gives me is worth the frustration) I was gonna buy a CZ-21, but Craig talked me out of it......:D

Sounds like something about their coil sealing process is not working. I asked, and they do not test them in salt water, which kind of surprised me. You have to replicate the conditions they'll be seeing to ensure the work was done correctly, right? Glad I'm not the only one to have this problem, but you'd think that after a few of these, they'd figure out why the coil wires keep going bad. It can't be cheap to keep fixing these machines.

Funny, but I thought at first that that was who scuba was talking about!

Thanks, y'all! Hoping my next outings are as [nearly] blissful as this one was!

Nice find Diggum! Sucks with the machine frustration and from the description of the car ride and beach arrival your kids must be somewhere about close to my kids ages  sounds so familiar!

Congrats on the silver! Same first initial we have. And on getting out.

You need to find a blue excal 800. My excal II 10" makes noise even in sub aqua. The 800 blue I can run hot in the surf without turning it down at all. And it runs great in pinpoint and disc. Cant speak for an excal II 8" since I never tried one. I got a CZ21 and it likes making noise:lol:

If you can find me one, I'll pick it up in January......:D

Thanks, Jeff! Definitely has been frustrating, but if it all gets me a stable and good machine in the end, it will have been worth it, I think. Or not.

I see you are on the legal side (north).
Oh, yeah! I remember reading about that side. I think you were the one talking about it.

Next time I'm in the area I'll look you up!
