Uncle Sam wants a piece of your loot

All those gold coins YOU have found technically belong to the us government because they were buried when gold was illegal to hold . Most people on the forum know of your hoard I would lay low if I was in your shoes . sube :timer:
I got a friend who could teach a master class on getting in trouble posting metal detecting finds online. Next time I see him I will check what his lawyer bill is up to.

Who knows what ne’r do wells will lurk in the IRS once they fill all 87,000 new hires.
According to the 2021 U.S. Treasury Department report estimating that around $80 billion in funding would allow the IRS to incrementally hire nearly 87,000 employees by the year 2031 is being misunderstood (on purpose?).

Most of those hires would be replacements for workers retiring from existing positions, including not only IRS enforcement agents, but also customer service and technology specialists.

According to the Treasury Department, audit rates for those earning less than $400,000 in actual income will not rise.

Rudy, yes, I pointed that out in post #9.

But for some reason the urban legend still makes the rounds, that it's 87k ADDED auditors. When instead it was only budget hearing talks on the budget for a coming decade. Which yes : Includes outgoing retiree replacements, and merely keeping up with population growth and bureaucracy. It is NOT 87k auditors waiting behind bushes to jump out and take our merc. dimes, clad, rings, etc... Trust me : They have bigger fish to fry, eh ?

A lot of "small fish" add up to become "large fish". :money::my2cents:

Heck, if the IRS came to my door, it would be to bring "me some $$$" sure won't find anything here, lol :rofl2::rofl2: Liked your post!
too_
I know of hunters who have boasted at the beach and shown their finds to beachgoers, you never do that... after he did it, sdhowed a gold ring to a woman... she walked away, 15 minutes later here she comes with a cop in tow and described the ring he showed her... he lost it... I laughed when he told me....

This subject comes up from time to time on md'ing forums. But I think it's only true if you sell it. Not by merely having found the object(s). Right ? And heck, Ebay (bless their little hearts) is already collecting taxes on buy/sell these days. So ... what's the worry?

And yes there's other ways to sell where no one's issuing 1099s (person-to-person transactions, like on craigslist, or to smelters who don't bother, blah blah).

Here's the bottom line : Our md'ing forums are FILLED with show & tell, where we show off our trophies back and forth. Right ? EVEN SOME VERY VALUABLE stuff from time to time. And I see guys show off their melt value checks from refineries (who maybe aren't issuing 1099s ?). Or persons who've shown staggering amounts of clad totals (that ... technically ... are supposed to go on your tax returns, since you're gonna go cash that in for some Benjamins).

But let me ask for forumites here : Has ANYONE EVER HAD AN IRS AGENT SHOW UP AT THEIR DOOR ? I mean, do we *really* think that the IRS is monitoring geeky forums like ours, to see who found and then sold a goodie ? Trust me : They have bigger fish to fry. So : Continue to boast away :friends:
AGREED. And continue to pay your taxes... That's the easiest way to never worry. LOL

They have to keep making up taxes for all of the frivolous spending, spending that doesn't even benefit you or me.

No IRS but I did have tobacco and firearns ! Why ? I used to be into High Power Rocketry and they just had to see the safe where my engines were stored.
Funny thing is, the ”motors” are excellerants and won’t explode!
They came to a launch once. Kids, families, cub scouts….the whole deal. Everyone having a good old time. They shut us down ! I swear to this day ,it was because they had the authority and just had to use it !
