Oklahunter and Rhubarb......thanks for replies ! :D

Those little 3/8" dia. aluminum washers confused the Ace250 and it bounced between FOIL and one cent !

Good thinking Todd. I hunted a asphalt parking lot at a swimming pool, which brought some unusual looks. I found coins where the asphalt had broken apart.

Thanks Terry55 !

I kinda like digging the gravel. Its hard, but a lot cleaner than the wet
earth this time of year here in Williamsburg, Ohio. Also, easier to locate
a find, rather than fingering through the muddy-puddy !

There is one big negative though.....I have a gravel/lime dust mix that
really corrodes the copper pennies big time ! :o( I tried Krom's
method of soaking in hot Hydrogen Peroxide in a cup until the bubbles stop (per his post Jan.13, 2006 1:55pm, and seconded by angellionel's
post Jan.23, 2006 8:22pm), but only one of the four pennies cleaned up
reasonably well......the other three actually got worse ! Appearance
remained very dark, with tiny white barnacle-like lumps on the faces. I
could just barely make out the memorial building on the backs of these
last three. I havn't decided what my next cleaning method will be, if any.

If you have a suggestion on something that might work, please let me know.

If they are newer coins, clads, and pennies that are not wheaties, I just tumble them. Anything older I just try to clean them up with mild soap and water.

Thanks Hoser ! :D

I'll try that. I think we have a rock tumbler stored away with some of
my boys childhood toys. Also, I have a vibrator-type that I use to clean
rifle & handgun cartridge cases prior to reloading.

Todd, what kind of polishing media do you use for the casings? I have seen some that come out of the tumbler like brand new.

Hoser...........I use ground corncob either plain or embedded with polishing compound . For real dirty cases, I start with ground walnut
shell media, then finish off with the corncob for a nice luster.

I have read a lot of various gun magazines over the years and there are many other recipes that have been tried with varying results. Some used
small metal pins or ceramic pellets in a slush mix of some sort in a water-tight tumbler. I believe it was Terry55 who posted that he includes
small gravel when tumbling his copper pennies.

Hope this helps and HH !

Tod you have to find out who has been polluting your area with those pennies! Still frozen in here now I would love to just get out. Cladius.

Cladius.....I think your right ! Would much rather find some high-value
coins. Could I barrow your Minelab EXII ? Easy now.....just kidding :P

Seriously, I just grabbed my Minelab catalog to check it out and WOW,
you went for the top-o-the- line, with all the bells and whistles !!!!

Sorry your area is still frozen in, but hey, march is here, so spring is just around the corner and you can use this time for research and planning !
