Day at the Dentist.

There was actually more to the story and I realized it had questionable content and was in the wrong section of the forum.

But what the hay.

So one thing Costa Rica is very popular for is medical tourism. In most cases any dental work, reconstructive surgery, cosmetic surgery or non US approved procedures are readily available here and penny's on the dollar here.

So, I have collect quite a number of cavities in my life and been to the dentist for drilling and filling many times and they always use the metallic cavity filler. I was starting to wonder if every time I was getting EFI noise on my detector if it wasn't my mouth transmitting signals.

Well my wife and I are moving back to the states next week and we decided to go get all the cosmetic work done to our teeth while we were still down here so I decided to have all my metal fillings removed and replaced with the natural epoxy to make them look natural again. We went to the dentist and I told him for a simple drill and fill for a cavity or 2 I would be fine awake but for removing a dozen filling and re filling I need the gas mask to zonk me out. WELL apparently the gas is a commodity here and used in REALLY high end practices so he didn't carry or offer it but he said he could have an anesthesiologist come in and put me under full anesthesia.

I went in yesterday morning at 9:30 and about 10:30 in the morning the anesthesiologist had the needle in my arm telling me to count backwards from 10 and SIX HOURS LATER my wife and 3 nurses are dragging me down 2 flights of stairs to our car. I was not aware of anything between 10:30 am yesterday and late last night until today. Today I have been the victim of non stop criticism and ridicule.

Apparently they had to reduce the anesthesia because I was having problems breathing, and once they backed it off a bit I was floating on simi consciousness. I swung at the dentist 3 times and managed to clock him square in the face once. As we are leaving I try and pee on the dentist sofa in the waiting room. My wife stops me and takes me to the rest room. Apparently I couldn't get it back in my pants and came out of the rest room fully exposed and as my wife tries to help me out she realized I wasn't done tinkling. When we were finally heading out I am scream for burger king and the dentist tells my wife I can not eat solid food for a few days. I reply with a slew of unforgivable language and demanded burger king. When I finally get out I give the dentist a big hug and announce my love for him "I LOVE YOU MAN" and announce that he is the best dentist in the world.

I am going back Friday for teeth whiting. I don't think I will be able to look him in the eye.

Kids, JUST SAY NO TO DRUGS!

For price reference, The anesthesia ran $400 and the 14 total filling removal and refill ran $600.
$1000 out the door for what I would only guess would have been over $6,000 in the states. Anesthesia it's self is a few grand.

okay.... after reading that i think i'll have to agree with your original "OUCH"!!!
i hope when you slugged him, you didn't knock any of his teeth out.

I have to be able to poke fun at my self. When I heard the details it ran through my head as a scene in one of those corny modern day adult comedies. The hangover or something like that.

i have the dentist tomorrow because my dog headbutted my 2 front teeth out.... gonna be a fortune

Not suggesting you should do this but stating a fact. People actually buy weekend plane tickets down here for medical and dental work because a $2000 dollar procedure in the states would run $500 down here and the round trip tickets are $800 so a weekend in Costa Rica and dental work for $1300. That's $700 LESS than having the work done at home and includes a mini vacation.

not sure how much faith I would have with a doctor in costa rica, here in Panama its hard to get a good dentist, unless you live in rich class neighborhood, and when they see Gringo...the price goes up.

As for doctors, Panama has some of the best in all of Central America, as most have been trained in the States or Europe....hope you feel well soon

Not at all the case Lem. I was talking about me being a pain in the butt. He was awesome, great price and he did a hell of a job. My teeth look GREAT. And aside from them being sensitive, which is expected, I am in good shape. My wife, my swegra and myself have all had great medical care here. And me being a gringo has not seemed to raised the bill at all.

 I love anesthesia it better than bein drunk or under the influence of any drug. My brother jus had surgery and it was his first time gettin anesthesia, afterwards he said :iwish: we could do this whenever we wanted its crazy.

Costa Rican anesthesiology is right up there with rock climbing and driving fuel trucks in African war zones.

Funny account of the actual procedure and AFTERMATH:o) LOL!! Hope you didn't suffer any severe pain! Still, a FUNNY account!! Reminds me of the Tim Conway dentist skit he did on the Carol Burnett show:o)
