I dug this interesting item a couple days ago at an older park that, among many other interesting uses, was once occupied by an old tavern at least as early as the 1850s, and the immediate area saw a good amount of War of 1812 movement. Most of my finds from the park over the years date from the 1930s and later, but I’ve also dug a token that dates from the early 1900s. My oldest known finds from the site are two large cents - so, although those older finds are few and far between, the site definitely has the potential for old finds.

Anyway, the item appears to be made of tombac, and is either an ornate button, brooch, or pin - it’s hard to tell which because the attaching device on the back is broken off. It rang up just a little below the US nickel range on the detector (23-25 were the numbers as I turned around the target with the Nokta Legend), and was found about 6” below the surface. The central figure is a bit worn, but to my eye, it looks like a man’s head wearing some sort of old military officer’s headgear (see sample pics below of a conquistador style helmet and a British War of 1812 era officer hat).

Any ideas or guesses on approximate age? Whether it’s a button, brooch, or something else? Do you see the same “head facing left wearing a hat/helmet” that I see, or do you see something else? Thanks in advance!

Pics below show the item right out of the hole, alongside a ‘36 Buff and ‘45P War Nickel found on the same hunt for scale, close ups both front and back, and sample images showing the styles of hats I’m potentially seeing on the central “head”.
