coin shortage? What is the Cause?

I see lots of post about yes there is a coin shortage and no there is no coin shortage. If there is one, what is the cause? I notice I find no coins in Coinstar return slots where I could count on 2 -3 silver dimes per month plus lots of foreign coins and other assorted clad.

    Coinstar "finds" $2.27 and $1.60

Here are pics from my previous 2 Coinstar "finds", the first one of $2.27 was from likely back in December, but many of the coins were so gunky I put them in a container of soapy water to soak overnight, well, "overnight" lasted till this morning  when I finally decided to take the time to...

    2020 Coinstar report

Not a bad year, considering fewer trips to grocery stores and a general lessening of Coinstar use by the public, due probably to the pandemic. Of the 191 coin total for 2020, 101 of those were from one haul in January. Here's the breakdown and a few pics: U.S. Coins (131 total for $5.87 face...

Coinstar "JACKPOT" (for me at least :) including what is either a Canadian or British penny

Well, considering most of the time I find nothing (or a crusty Zincoln or two) it is a "JACKPOT" for me  Anyhow, this happened about a couple weeks ago but I'm just now getting around to posting about it, and wanted to encourage others that even if you usually find nothing, still keep...

    coin shortage

Due to the coronavirus virus there seems to be a coin shortage. My grocery store put a hand written sign on the Coinstar machine. Please bring all coins to the customer service desk and we will give you cash and not charge you any fees. So the store needs coins. Bet coinstar is not happy about...

    COINSTAR Customer Service Tale

I had a reason to call Coinstar's Customer Service folks yesterday, after the AMAZON Gift Card Code on the receipt was rejected as invalid when I tried to redeem it at Amazon.com After we straightened out the problem the guy asks me if there was anything else he could help me with. My reply...

I think this might be my biggest Coinstar haul ever (not huge, just big for me)

Must have checked the Coinstar at just the right time today, found 7 clad quarters and a Bahamas dime, no silver, but still much better than the more usual crusty Zincolns  Back in December I found what I initially thought at first glance to be a crusty Zincoln, but turned out to be a...

    coinstar find

Had to go to the Kroger store to get birthday card and sum Tums. Of course I always check Coinstar. About every other week I find something. Mostly foreign coins and silver dimes or zinc pennies. If it is to be silver, it is always a silver dime. Why? do they weigh less or more than regular...

    Another Coinstar find today.

Went to grocery store for the wife. When I entered the store I headed right to the Coinstar as usual. But abruptly stop since there was a guy and two kids loading in their change. I figured with the two kids, they would check the coin return. Upon checking out, passed real close to it and...

    Coinstar Slot machine tokens ?

At the market today, the COINSTAR reject tray had a small handful of coins and tokens, including six of these copper plated tokens with '777' on one side and a picture of a slot machine on the opposite side. They are slightly larger in diameter that a U.S. quarter, appear to be plated and a...

    coinstar and brinks question

I ran into a gum ball route man who used to work for brinks. I asked him if they sorted out silver coins at their facilities. He said no, they don't have time and don't let employees exchange clad for silver either. I wonder if Coinstar has the same policies. I would think that the machine does...

My First Coinstar Silver... And It's Big!

Yesterday, while running some errands we stopped off at Walmart. So as always, I walk up to the Coinstar machine thinking maybe this time I will find my first Coinstar silver. As I get with a few feet I can see some coins sitting in the reject tray. Most of the time it's empty so I am...

    coinstar and dimes

I have always wondered why in my coinstar searches, any silver that i find is mostly dimes? I have found only on silver quarter. Most common find is foreign coins. do they weigh them or electronically test them?

My most unusual Coinstar coin so far

Unusual for my Coinstar's location as more often than not it's usually crusty zincolns or nothing with rare exceptions  ......keep checking those Coinstar reject trays, you might just very occasionally be surprised

I have an idea for the sponsors here... Coinstar.

Well, we all know how popular the coinstar machines are. Especially with the people among our affliction. I've seen plenty of posts about hammering flat and filing off burrs. Running clad through the tumbler, washing machine, electrolysis, DIY jet turbine, and many other creative methods of...

I think I just robbed a Coinstar Machine...

I always look in the coin return slot of Coinstar machines at the grocery store...usually find some kind of neat token, foreign currency, and one time...a real 14K diamond earring. This time it was about $7 worth of change all at once. Unfortunately no silver, but I definitely felt like I was...
