Hey guys found this super stained what I believe to be a gold ring in a lake. What is the best method to cleaning this without ruining it? Hoping there is a non-abrasive way as I think there is a light script on the flat section. Thanks!!
I’ve found plenty of tarnished silver to know, it would have rang up as a high tone. This one range up a low tone 25 (nickel) signal on the NOX 900. Inside of ring is stained can’t see anything…it’s either gold or junk metal. Sounds like gold when I set it on the table. How do you know its gold? Markings? it looks more like tarnished silver.
It’s heavily stained on the inside. Only way I have found so far is soap and water or peroxide as methods without abrasives.HMMM, what does the mint mark look like if there is one that is. Cool looking ring. Not sure how to clean that one.
Not all silver registers as a high tone on a metal detector, so I wouldn't rule out silver. I've found plenty of tarnished old gold in lakes, and it usually doesn't take much effort to get them shiny again. My guess is, gold plated silver, but I'm no expert. Nice find regardless!I’ve found plenty of tarnished silver to know, it would have rang up as a high tone. This one range up a low tone 25 (nickel) signal on the NOX 900. Thanks it might not be gold who knows. I just want to be careful with it!Not all silver registers as a high tone on a metal detector, so I wouldn't rule out silver. That’s what I was thinking. I found a bunch of tarnished gold rings last year… brought them to the jewelry store everyone was 10K guess the additionalHmm if your lucky it could be 10k gold?
Awesome!! I’ll check that out!!Recommend you try Mothers Mag polish. Been using it for about 15 years to polish gold rings to sell. And I just use an old sock for a rag inside out.
I've used it for years to change dull ugly jewelry into shiny sellable pieces. Here is an example of an old brass ing I found at a carnival ground and used Mothers on it. You would swear it was gold now.Never used the ( Mother's) at least on coins! Wish I had some to try, not the first time I have heard of that, might be something to it !!

I called "junk" once on one who I detect with dug when they showed it to me. And it even was peeling. Told them it might have a glass stone? I was wrong when it turned out a real old one with a flawless diamond. Think it was 18K? Jeweler said those type Diamonds are "Investment grade"No doubt in my eyes, it is gold.. I dig a lot of stained gold that looks just like that...Most is 10k, some 14 and 18 even.
And I agree, Mothers is the best..

It might be gold, I just don't remember it ever taking THAT much effort to get the tarnish off of the old freshwater gold I have found (been a couple years though ). Usually a light rinse with water, soap, and a brush does it for me. I guess it all depends on the environment it was found in, and how long it's been in that environment. All methods above work well, I'll use that mother's polish with a soft dremel wheel and get a mirror finish on display pieces. Please keep us updated, I'm curious to see what markings it may have. Thanks it might not be gold who knows. I just want to be careful with it!
