People Planting Finds

I just looked and he deleted everything except for one video. Pretty sad to think that he probably faked every video for multiple years.

I'm willing to bet that's the case. I noticed 3-4+ rings in each video and that's just not possible. He probably made them all private until the smoke settles and will come back like nothing happened

I'm not very knowledgeable about all what is possible with that video site, but hopefully he can't simply open a new account under a different username and continue showing any faked finds as if he was someone else.

I'm fairly positive he'll have no issues opening up another YouTube account and start fresh if so desired

I wanted to throw my 2 cents in here as I was a regular viewer of his channel.

I have a few YouTube detectorists that I follow, mainly to learn from others. Emulate success so to speak. When I first heard of someone getting nabbed for planting finds, his wasn't the first name that jumped to mind. I was almost certain the guilty party would be another channel I watch semi regularly. I admit I was genuinely shocked when upon finding out who it was.

As others have stated...looking back now perhaps the volume of his finds were too good to be true. I know that my wife and I have never had the luck he supposedly had....or others for that matter. Much of that can be explained by our experience level and the locations we've visited so I didn't really suspect him. The amount of good finds....always hunting alone and very rarely if ever showing his face should have set off alarms. Live and learn.

Yea he's deleted everything the only one I subscribed to and the Dig that Beep guys.. Funny that Kev always had the same shoes, watch and gear in all his vids. "Hey hey look at that another Gold ring way cool.. On to the next"..

I have never seen his vids before. Last night I looked and there were lots of vids will a huge amount of finds on his youtube channel that looked too good to be true "but", Ive always said, never accuse anyone of anything unless you have a substantial amount of proof.

I just checked the youtube site 2 minutes ago and all the vids except 2 are gone.
Kinda suspicious ?

The post on this thread showing an eBay item sale as well as the same item being dug on planters last hunt is telling. The item being an 1877 dime with initials on back is pretty unique.

There’s a huge difference between “possible” and “probable” but you’re right…there comes a point at which it is SO improbable that it might as well be called “impossible”. Finding that many rings in turf? That many good or great finds on a regular basis? Those who know better…and we know better…know what the odds are and what can be expected to be found, and overall, at about what rate. Teachers can fool students. It’s much harder to fool other teachers.

I am a total skeptic. I believe as little as possible without proof. And considering YouTube is... "Entertainment"... well.... there ya go.

I believe in nothing, unless I see it! And yes.. I'm an Athiest! Logical / analytical / pragmatic thinking will do that to you.

People don't realize, TV shows like America's Got Talent, are TOTALLY scripted. Everyone is told what to do, what to say. Life is fake........

If you knew the amount of them that do it you'd probably be shocked. Even some of the really big name groups on the east coast a lot of people like to watch I'm certain plant finds every now and again. Of course you expect some pretty good oldies to come from that side of the states but getting properties back to back to back and just constantly every single hunt producing handfuls of old coppers and silvers and no wheaties, rosies, or newer junk coins is very unrealistic. They get paid more money by Youtube the more people that sub, watch, like, etc. You're simply not going to get 50k subs only digging mercs, rosies, and wheat cents video after video. People want to see something amazing and old pop out of the ground. I've had my channel for over 6 years and I think just recently only hit over 1k subs. Because I don't accept any money from YouTube, nothing is planted, what I really find is what is shown in the video and 90% of the time it's mostly boring rosies, old mercs, wheats, indians and occasionally something like a Barber half or an old large cent will pop out. I do it purely for fun and it's neat to look back 6 years and see where I was digging on Youtube. Funny thing is, the one time I did have a phenomenal day beach hunting at a drained lake and we pulled 8 or 9 old gold rings that were all over 15" deep in wet sand I had a bunch of comments on that one calling BS and saying I planted them before hand and let the sand settle. I lose my tape measure I just sat down atleast 10 times a day, like I'm going to pre-bury gold jewelry over 15" deep and hope to god I can recover it later.:lol:

🤣🤣🤣 I remember burying a fat gold ring on the lower slope once to do a test with a friend. Dug the hole and just threw it in , covering it up. Well , a big wave came in and took us down. The ring must have moved or settled deeper. I couldn't find it. The sheer panic attack I had was horrible. Took me about 20 minutes to dig a giant crater looking for that thing. Found it , but never will I do that "toss the ring in the hole test" again.

I think there is a variation on the planted find theme where finds that genuinely come up at Location A, but are not filmed, are "relocated" to Location B and then "rediscovered" for the sake of the camera...This is done to pad out a later filmed hunt....

I am not saying this is ok as it's another form of deception, but basically I don't any of these YouTube channels at face value unless I know and trust the person concerned..

A valid observation. Because I recall back in the pre-internet days , when people did their show & tell via magazine submitted articles, the following occurred :

There was a dude who made a story for one of the treasure magazines, about a swimming lake in CA that was drained . And the guy had impressive pictures of piles of gold rings ! A literal reading of the text would have made you conclude that these finds came from within a few weeks . Ie.: multiple gold rings, every day, every hunt.

I ran into the guy though, and quizzed him thoroughly about the episode. Turns out that it was the result of an all-summer-long hunt. Not compressed into a few short weeks as the article had said. So it was one ring here, and one ring there (and not "every hunt"), for lots and lots of time and work, for months.

As we talked, and the details emerged, I showed stern disapproval . I questioned this dishonesty. But he said that he wanted to make the story more interesting. Ie.: "Literary liberty" that is granted to authors  And I guess, in his mind's eyes, he did "find" them after all. So what's wrong with spicing up the story a little bit ?

Tom,

I think similar happens in all forms media, and for many reasons, some more valid than others.

One of the few channels I watch is Terra Britannia, and one of the reasons is that if the guy has a poor session, he will show a find or two, and then announce nothing else come up and that he's cutting to a different hunt on a different day..

Sometimes he uses material from two or three hunts on a single video, but he is up front about it.

I have no issue with this approach, it's just reflects the reality of detecting...

... reflects the reality of detecting...

Have you noticed how on the bass-fishing channel, that "every cast is a lunker", eh ? Nothing about days when you're skunked. Or that little 11" bass that hit your lure. Or the times you got snagged in the tully weeds and lost your lure, blah blah. Instead, every cast is a lunker

So my buddy & I make sure to include things like footage of boring bullet shells. Or a memorial penny (that somehow made its way to a stage stop supposed to be gone by 1900, doh !). And THEN have the footage of the keepers for that day.

We also include audio of the good and the bad. So that you can hear audio of the signals we're electing to pass, versus those which we're electing to chase.

And I've noticed that other videos are doing the same thing. THAT'S what "makes it real".

On youtube there is ed the beach hunter that hunts California beaches and finds tons of great rings. BAM! he says every time he finds a ring.

No Way does any other California beach hunter even come close to the number of fantastic finds of gold and diamond rings. For a while he narrated his youtube videos in English. Then it seems most of his English speaking fans figure him out and now he just narrates them in Spanish.

Why do people do this lying to themselves and everyone else? Low self-esteem is my guess.

Me personally, I find a few so, so civil war relics maybe about five rings in 6 years and one nice silver tiffany's bracelet.

I don't post many pictures of my finds, because who wants to see my junk and clad finds. Probably no one.

I don't make metal detecting videos because to do it right it really takes a lot of time. I really do appreciate the guys who do make good metal detecting videos like Rattlehead, IDX Monster, Green Mountain meal detecting and a few others. And the best metal detecting videos ever, ever made are by Mr. Mackenzie Crook. If you haven't seen them then you are missing out on the very best metal detecting videos.

Bam !!!! Talk about being lost in translation. 🤣

Maxx, I think you are on to something. We make videos, find buried food, and eat it on the spot!! Like a cross between a metal detecting video and one of those guys who open gross expired cans or MRE's and eat them!

I do watch Hoover Boys, Quarter Hoarder, and Green Mountain on a weekly basis. MDing ETex Kevin USED TO be on my list. What are the names of these guy's youtube channels? Definitely need to fill a void:yes:
