I went to Dillon beach today and to my displeasure they are now charging $20. To park! :jawdrop::jawdrop::yikes:
So that was my last visit to this only privately owned beach in Northern California.
One less beach to visit.
Free beaches only now for me👍

$20 to simply park your car near the beach?

That's criminal in my mind!

Have the wife or friend drop you off and schedule a pick up time.

That's a good idea.
It's funny, the lady who took the payment said" I'm embarrassed saying this much money"

"Lots of Felix Pennies Today :( " You say it like its a bad thing. Look into getting Ubered - maybe it's cheaper?

Just a bunch of zincs on the inter-tidal wet beach ? If so, that's a really bad sign. Any time lightweight stuff (zincs, caps, aluminum) are on the wet-inter-tidal, means sand is coming "in", and no erosion has happened for a long time.

In fact, I think it's been about 2 or 3 bad years in a row for the CA coast (at least for OUR parts of CA, maybe So. CA has had a bit of erosion now & then). It's gotten to where I've almost turned 100% to land hunting in the last 2 to 3 yrs. :(

But couldn't extreme high tides and small surf also pull down sand ? That's my experience down here. I was out for last nights 3am low. Just walking around aimlessly in the wet , soft , spongy desert. No cuts. It was horrible hunting. But nobody around and perfect temperature.

Well, I'm only speaking from my experience here in my part of CA. I'm aware that each beach (locations on earth) have varying rules. And even within each rule, is subsets of rules, blah blah. Exceptions-to-the-exceptions, blah blah

Yes, extreme high tides (those type that only occur like 2x per year, or whatever) have been known to erode EVEN IN THE ABSENCE OF HEAVY SURF. But I have only seen that be true on cove/pocket beaches. Not open-ocean facing beaches. Could it be different in So. CA ? Perhaps.

But for the bigger picture, over all the earth, the main factors seem to be : on-shore or cross-shore winds + high tides + large swells. Does odd-ball freak off-season erosion occur at isolated spots ? Sure. But if the game is to try to know when to go (rather than "relying on flukes"), then the 3 ingredients are your best bet to watch for.
