How long does it take for a 14K gold ring to look like this in salt water?

We have a bit of rough surf moving things around a little.

I think the band says 14K and "SAKE?" Maybe it once said Keepsake? Can't tell.

Now before some of you say "That looks plated" yes it does... :) But it's not. It held to 14K acid test and held for just under 30 seconds to 18K acid before the 18K acid ate it.

Gold ring number 61 for 2017.

Based on how beat up that ring looks, there's no way it's plated. All of the plating would be gone and it would look much worse.

Nice rescue.

I have to disagree with Raider... the ring looks plated... looks like copper bleeding through... I have never seen a real gold ring look like that even in 10k... just because a ring might be marked 14k doesn't mean it is...

Brass will hold on some acids for a while and holds good on 10k

Just got back from my jeweler friend that sells, repairs and makes jewelry and he confirmed it's 14K. I've found several that look like this.

Thanks guys!

 To be honest if I didn't find several like it in the past and then had them tested and verified and someone else was posting that pic I'd be thinking "That's not gold!" myself :)

It's toasted for sure but it's money in the pocket! I'm tempted to have it shined up but then it would weigh 2.0 grams instead of 3.0

I'm just curious if the jeweler could make it look new/sellable from how it looks now and how much gold would be gone if he tried. Since it may only be a difference of about 24 dollars I just might do that.

You asked:How long does it take for a 14K gold ring to look like this in salt water?

It is my thought that it is not the salt water that is the cause of the erosion. It is the action of the sand in the churning surf whether it be fresh or salt water. Depending on the amount of time that the ring was subjected to the churning of the surf and the degree of harshness of that surf. Very much akin to sand blasting.

No idea but that ring did some serious tumbling among the rocks!

Indeed!

Sure makes sense :)

No matter the condition she is gold and melts. Keep on hammering girl!!

That is a really beaten up ring, but a nice find for sure! What is that black silver thing to the left of the ring? Looks like a slug to me.

I'm sorry, I also think it looks plated. I've seen a lot gold come out of the water... Most of the water. It looks the same as it went in...

Craig,,,It's BRASS man! Remember?:laughing::laughing: Hate to say it does not look good on the gold. I learned the hard way. If I read right, it held 14K acid for 30 seconds. ? Might have misunderstood but 14K acid will not eat it at all. Real 14k can stay under acid for hours.

The BRASS comment to Craig above is an old thread where I swore a ring was gold and Craig was teasing me saying brass. Took it to a jeweler and he tested it. Sadly it was brass. :D Brass looks good and can fool. Hope your ring is gold.

Looks like Someone was chewing on that ring. Depending on conditions I’d say it was in the water at least a year but realistically more like 5+ Years to get that beat up. Nice save!

For the doubters, try the specific gravity thing. Brass comes in around 8.5, 10K @ 11, and 14K over 12. Might have something to do with what it's alloyed with, but I got to go along with the surf eroding it, especially in the rocks.

X2! Simple but effective on a band like that.
