How far do you typically travel to do MDing?

I generally hunt within 20 minutes of my house but if I go on a group hunt, I usually will drive an hour or so away. I really enjoy my group hunts and have a great bunch of guys (forum members) that I hunt with. I like to be challenged occasionally by hunting with others. I believe that it keeps me sharper and improves my hunting ability.

About 900 miles. Granted, I used other reasons officially, but the trip wouldn't have taken place if I couldn't detect at the beach.

My three local beaches are in the range of 32 miles. Well before sunrise it is a 40-45 minute drive. Once traffic gets heavy it is an hour and a half drive

Most of my dirt fishing spots are within 30-40 miles.

Being a caregiver for an elderly relative with dementia I am usually limited to being away from home for about 1 1/2 hours at a time, so whatever the travel time both ways is would take away from the actual hunting time so I usually wouldn't travel too far from home, (not complaining, just explaining), of course I could have much more hunting time in our 1 1/2 acre yard, because of very little travel time

Hmm. Usually around 15 to 20 minutes to a local beach.
If the tide's right or I've got a lot of free time then I'll go as far as an hour away.
There are several areas further than an hour that I'm waiting on a good opportunity to hit.
Gas is pretty expensive over here, so if I venture far I want to be pretty sure I'm hitting a beach that will yield at least gas-money's worth in clad.

Oh, and how often depends a lot on work and weather and the tides. I think my record Is 5 days in the same week (when I had the week off work). Usually I'm lucky if I can get in two good hunts in the same week. But the low tides should be swinging back toward the nighttime soon, so maybe my opportunities will increase!

You can go anywhere in Springfield,Mo. from anywhere in town in less than 20 minutes. I stay in town to go detecting, but if I'm leaving town to do something else I'll take it with me.

I don't like to spend more time on transport than I can hunt.

This! It's my guiding philosophy for the unsavory portions of most things I do (or don't do)! Like cooking - if it takes longer to prepare and clean up than it takes to enjoy eating it, I'm probably going to make PB&J instead! Same goes for my traveling for MDing - my time available for detecting is far too limited, so every minute spent driving is burning into precious coil-swinging time.

All of my detecting so far has been in my own county except one trip into Michigan. There's plenty of history right in my immediate vicinity, so I can't imagine that I'll often go much further than 30-45 minutes away from home. If I went any further than that, it would need to be a full day of hunting and/or very promising sites to make it feel worthwhile, I think.

I don't know if any of you have ever watched American Pickers, but the two guys on the show refer to driving around without a plan as "freestyling." I love to do that. Mostly because whenever I have a plan to visit a place I think will be great, I end up getting skunked. I've been way more successful detecting in locations I didn't even know existed until I drove by them with my detector in the car.

I haven't seen it for some time, but American Pickers had some neat episodes, they even did one somewhere around our little town in the past. If they were detectorists they could hunt all those places they go to after they got done filming each episode.

I work out of town quite a bit so when I drive or fly to another state I'll carry my MD gear with me and hunt during the evenings.

Not quite the same as leaving the house for the sole purpose of hunting but when I research a town and surrounding areas to MD that I'll be working in, it makes the trip more enjoyable..

I try to hit a few locations close together. It saves time and makes for a nice outing. But usually drive within 30 minutes. Once i hit enough spots here locally i plan to travel out further.
