I knew it was going to be a good day when I scooped up Paul Bunyan's diaper pin!
I was wandering the lake following a faint trail of old targets mixed in with 8,000 pop and pull tabs when I looked into my scoop and saw it.
Now I'm an old hand at this, I'm salty and jaded and I've seen the elephant and I've heard the owl.
But I have never seen an old brass safety pin that's longer than my hand.

So eat your hearts out North Woods Minnesota and Wisconsin peeps, I now have proof Paul Bunyan was born in Michigan!!! :dingding:

Oh yeah, I found a gorgeous men's 5.8 gram 14k diamond ring too. Came in at an annoying 55 on my AT Pro just as crackly and hollow sounding as the 6,455 pop tabs I scooped before it. Sound and the readout was identical.

Thanks for looking! The diaper pin isn't for sale!! I'm keeping the ring too, it fits! :bling:

Well, I hate to burst your diaper pin bubble but my guess is that the pin came from Great Lakes Naval Base bootcamp. At least in the USMC (and I assume the Navy) those are used to hold the top of a mesh laundry bag closed.

Oh yeah, nice rescue on the gold & ice too.

Annoying gold!:laughing: Hey heres another Idea about that pin like Top mentioned...Back in the 70's and before, when a guy was trapping, he had to have a trappers license pinned to the back of his coat....sometimes going through the cattails or brush or falling through the ice, a guy would lose that pin along with the license...that was always a bummer...

Nice hunt there Pal! Congrats on some more of that beautifully annoying gold!

No kidding, I wondered where such a big brass pin would come from.

But seeing as I'm going full Mud Puppy with my description today I still say it's PB's diaper pin! :wow:

Congrats, but shhhhhhh, don't mention the Paul Bunyan thing to the MN Gopher fans, they haven't seen the axe in 12 years, and I'm sure they are thinking it was just a myth to begin with.

Paul Bunyan never wore a diaper! He wiped his @ss with a handful of ND shale, gave it a toss over his shoulder, and created California!:laughing:

The mesh bag was used by dipper laundry's for years. They would have a number on the head of the pin to identify the person that belong to that bundle of dippers. The dippers were washed in the bag. Then they would empty the dippers in a dryer. After drying they would go back in the mesh bag and pined. Making sure that that person got there own dippers back.

And that gentlemen, is how the term "Skivvy Dipping" evolved....Back then, folks were way too modest to go in swimming completely nude, even at night...so in a show of proper upbringing and decorum, they kept their skivvys on, hence the term "Skivvy Dipping".......Nice work there Buda!:laughing:

Only from you mud only from you.:laughing::laughing::laughing: I can't even imagine the life you have lived. You must have been a principal's nightmare:yes::yes::yes:.

Nice old ring Irons... that pin could also be from a hunters license holder... I used to have one similar when I hunted for tasty animals

Well yeah Buda, good conversation here about this imaginary 'Paul Bunyan diaper pin' Irons thinks he found...Sure if it was valid it would be a great score and command a Kings Ransom on Ebay, but the sad fact is we are all here to learn, so I humbly take umbrage to his aspregious ignorant claim and add this...

The main reason Irons is incorrect, besides what I already outlined, historically speaking, IF Paul Bunyan ever wore a diaper, that Pin is just too small! Indeed, regarding same, its well documented, back in 1887, Gustave Eiffel built a tower in honor of Paul Bunyans prepubescency, it stands in Paris, protruding through the Earth at full glory measuring 1063' or 324 'metres' for you Texans that may be reading...

Anyway, Thats Paul Bunyan...a great big flannel wearing woodsman that in no way a tiny little brass pin could encompass a swaddling cloth of this magnitude...not only that, there was a good outcome...because of Gustave Eiffel's monument, many a young lad was infatuated with aptly named 'Erector sets'... see how this all ties in seamlessly? Amazing! I've been playing with my own personal Erector set going on 60yrs and still cant get it more than 4" high!...(Thats about 100mm for you Texicans) I bet this 'Bobby' guy knows what I'm talking about...keep tugging away there Bobby! Get a grip on yourself! Start out with Elmers glue and some popsicle sticks! Who knows what you might manage to build? Give it a go and report back please!

ps..that a nice blue cobalt marble there Irons...I'll give you a dollar for it next time I see you? I bet it has magical properties...

I"m not a troll, I will ease up and turn my cheek. Sorry and God Bless

Good Idea there Bob! I like God too! God is extremely cool! The last refuge for scoundrels and a friend of the seekers of the lost!

For it is written: "Let him who is without sticks, cast the first stone"....Some folks like Irons actually get out there and Hunt, and some folks like me and you just type...Heck, like you, I dont even own a detector!...I just stumbled upon this site one day looking for a deal on beanie babies...No trouble, good group here! Welcome to the Forum!

ps Irons..you wanna sell me that there ring ya just found?? I'll pay ya melt this week...throw in Paul Bunyans diaper pin and I'll buy lunch even!

"Seen the Elephant and heard the Owl"....not too many folks would get these very old Timey references, generally used singularly, and you strung them together perfectly...and I thank you for that Jim...

Well, Powder River and let her buck!

Dang, deleted posts and I could have used some entertainment today! It's all been downhill and pumpkin pie since finding the mystical Paul Bunyan diaper pin! I have been constructing a pine wood shrine for it in my pole barn and will charge a small but fitting charge to view it.
With a burma shave type sign campaign I figure I will have the summer tourists lining up to pay me and take a $5 bundle of split oak with them to their campsite.

Mud old pal I will give you the cobalt marble but the diamond ring was custom made for my right hand many many moons ago and gently placed in the lake for me to find. It's waiting place was also liberally salted with fishing lures, shotgun shells, ring style pull tabs, rusty washers and rotted Felix pennies but what the heck. I knew it was there! :D

;)

:dingding: Beautiful ring and Paul Bunyan's diaper pin are great! BUT the banter amongst you is the best!!

And this is why I always come home with a pocket full of pull tabs even though I know each and every one is going to be a pull tab when I dig it.

Great job on the yellow and ice. Glad it fits.
