Ever wonder whether those were really found yesterday, or found at all?

Well....

...wait to I post my finds, there so lame that maybe somebody WILL think ive made them up...
Ive been reading these people for a month, this is the best forum for metal detecting, great, honest people....thats wy i joined!!

Nobody will ever think my finds are fake because they are so crappy! Other than a few nice cans and a silver quarter (which was actually laying on top of the ground) I've found nothing but clad. Nobody fakes that:D

Ever question whether all the wonderful finds we see on all the the different MD'ing forums of today are represented 100% accurately? After spending numerous hours on the forums I get a distinct feeling that many of these posts are inaccurate. Perhaps previous finds that are said to be dug yesterday, or maybe some pics of purchased coins or collections, etc.? Why would someone do such a thing? I dunno', perhaps for notoriety?

Just seems that there are many posts out there that are rather incredible in nature - consistent 100+ year old finds from rather new detectorists, to consistent and incredible finds at the same local tot lot week after week, to huge numbers of current clad whose pictures look like current pocket change, to maybe the same items used in multiple posts over different periods of time. Would be a real shame if this were true...

No whining and no ill feelings towards the fellow man, just thinking back to good lessons learned from Dad many eons ago saying "ya can't believe everything you read in the news..."
i just wanted to kinda get this off my chest cause i have actually been losing some sleep over it.i am a"rather new detectorist"and i have found some good finds(i think)and posted pic's on here.EXP:the 1921 Morgan i found the other day.the city park that i found it at is about the size of a couple of football fields and once a year there is a thing called the Hwy 127 yard sale,it goes from kentucky to alabama and comes right through my town.well alot of venders set up shop at the park that i detect(by alot i mean hundreds).so after the 3-4 days are up that they are there i figured that would be a great spot for clad.i found the morgan dollar there plus some other little odd and end relics.ever sinse reading this post i've been paranoid:( thinking that people might think that i bought the Morgan and posted a pic.it was the very first silver coin i have found so far and it pretty much devistates me to think you fokls might believe i'm a lier.i do imagine a vendor dropped it a while back because it was down in the ground and not up on the surface.it did take some cleaning but not really alot and it is in very good condition.but anyway i just had to get this off my chest,i have no reason to lie about nothing and i hope its not me that some of you guys are refering to about posting FAKES,hell,if it is me be a grown up and just ask.sorry i sound so whiny but it does bother me.HH

I believe this thread was started before you found the dollar.

headhunter don't let it bother you people will think what they want no matter what you do or say. As long as you know the truth and can sleep at night don't worry about it.

And don't let it stop you from posting your finds.

Never crossed my mind. My VERY first coin was a standing liberty quarter. Thought it must've been a foriegn coin.

Headhunter,
We all find really decent coins, relics, and jewelry. It's when someone posts every other week that they find multiple Morgan dollars, and in-between those weeks they find 13 Standing Liberty Quarters and 8 seated Liberty Dimes and 4 V-nickles and 39 Indian head pennies and 142 wheat cents, ALONG WITH $58.60 in clad that I start to call BS, if you know what I mean. Oh, I almost forgot the 5 Standing Liberty Halfs . Look around on a different forum and you'll see what I mean - it's utterly laughable, and others in the same that reply "nice going! Man, you're the best! Nobody beats Joe Blow at the ancient finds!", then they too somehow claim similar finds a week later... Just a couple days ago I read somebody just picked up a new, expensive pinpointer, and their first day out with it pronounced that it works "pretty good" as it helped them find a 3-cent piece stuck along the side of the hole that was 3" deep. A 3-cent piece 3" into the soil - pleeeease... Well, that might be so, but because it was a post from that same person that found all the stuff above, and they treat a 3-cent piece so nonchalantly like they pick 'em up every other day - sorry, you can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can rarely fool experienced MD'ers who know better... Nobody in this day & age consistently finds silver like they used to back in the late 60's and early 70's - nobody.

It's us that find that/those really nice item(s) every so often that I'm not talking about.

iv found rings, silver and gold a few crazy whatits, tokens and coins a few other items that only the gods of detecting know what they are ...i just dont post them ,its not because someone mite think there bought or unreal finds, as long as i know there real thats all that matters to me. to each there own...........

whewww, that makes me feel alot better,i didn't mean to cause such a stir.i was ready to get in contact with whoever takes care of this forum and see if they could take my morgan pic's off here somehow i was so paranoid.but i would NEVER DREAM of posting something that wasn't the hosnest truth, unless it was a joke that i was going to let be known.thanks guys!oh by the way,do they make anykind of med's for my paranoia :?::lol: BYE BYE and HH.

Ive had so many people challenge my finds ive just learned to ignore em. this year ive found 6 morgans{4 in a coin purse} last year i found 2 went 13 years before i found my first..last year i found 11 walker halves...up to 5 so far this year...for the past month or so ive averaged 2 silver coins per week. i also hunt atleast 6 days per week...trips from 2hrs-10hrs depends on my other obligations. i had a guy awhile back send me a message saying i was completely full of crap...said hes hunted 30 years and never found a morgan...i replied with sorry for you luck...this is my fault why? i hunt alot of private property and in return i find alot of nice coins..simply because these sites are virgin...if i exclusivly hunted parks id be lucky to find 1-2 silvers a month...nothing at all wrong with hunting parks..i do it alot as well and when i do my finds are average at best...the moral of this story is...you should never have to defend your finds...and noone should ever put you in a situation where you should have to..if they dont believe ya thats there problem. i see alot of stuff i question but i never confront anyone about it..not my problem. but i do get a kick out of someone trying to pass a silver toned 100 year old nickel as a find..i dont care what kinda of soil you hunt in or what kind of method you use to clean your coins a 100year old nickel will never come out of the ground silver in color and no amount of cleaning will ever restore its original color. keep posting your finds we all enjoy seeing them and reading the stories behind them.

I posted along time ago about those older nickles being posted that were not discolored and had folks reply it depends on the local soil conditions. I never dug one that wasn't discolored myself. I read last night where someone posted about all the older coin finds and multipule morgan silver dollars, i thought to myself, now this could get interesting.
Myself I caught lots of flak for posting Civil War relics I found in Wisconsin back in my early metal detecting days. But then that only told me those who gripped and scoffed had so far failed to develope the basic research skills needed to make what I consider average finds.

I for one believe Relic Hounds finds, due to my own experiences I had when I lived back in Wisconsin. I wrote an article which is on the Treasure Quest Home Page, so I'll post a link to it. I got three stories there on that web page, all deal with making older finds and how I went about it.
The first concerns numbers of finds and where I found them to be most abundant.

The next two deal with finding some pretty nice stuff as a new comer to the hobby with a cheap metal detector. These are the finds that were posted as a new comer and the old timers voiced there dis-belief that they were real. I also heard I've detected for 20 years and never found anything like that. Then they addressed others on the forum to agree with them.

I would say my latest find would be hard to believe. After all, who would think a 1900 year old Roman coin could be found in southwest Kansas? Anything is possible.

Never underestimate the power of a virgin spot or luck. I normally just find rosies and mercs with an IH here and there. This year (especially this last month) has seen me find coins that are way out of the norm for my area. I just figure Jesus is blessing me for all my hard work. This hotel site I've worked has given up three IH's (one found by my wife), 1 seated dime, 2 barber dime, 1 merc, 1 SLQ, a chinese cash coin, silver ring, silver jewelry piece, civil war button, etc...best spot I've ever detected. Those are just my finds, the other two guys detecting it found 1 gold ring, 1 SLQ, 3 barber dimes and more. I'll give most people the benefit of the doubt. But there are some you just have a feeling are full of crap. They usually don't stick around long. This truly is the best metal detecting site on the net.

I agree there is a lot of luck to it and some times things just don't make much sense. I have found four CW bullets and they were all found in school yards. My first IH was found at a school that was built in 1976. Lately I've been hunting with a buddy he has only found clad while I've been finding wheats, silver and rings I guess I've just been luckier.

my first day

my first day at detecting was not that monumental about 56 cents in clad before i even new what clad was.and 1 wheatie of wich, i love it like a son.
anyhoot i figured that lack of knowhow and equipment i faired well . however
when i logged on to this as well as other md sites it seemed well kinda a bit much. indeed i hope i am wrong in thinking this and some day ill pull up a few thousand coins in a short afternoon. and then i will defend all the huge finds that are presented within this hallowed site.

Since this post died, I see a few case on here I would call BS on. The same folks with astronomical finds on a weekly basis. But hey this is just my opinion.

I've seen the posts I believe you are talking about. I also don't think a few old coins from before 1900 are all that uncommon to find in one outing in a good area. One fellow is hunting a demo site and in an old area, he dug several coins from that time period, nothing super old or valuable.

Ya I mean sure people can do it if they wanted to, but what do they gain?

Respect from other people?

That is just about it.

I mean, sure I have done it once coming home and showing my mom and dad what I found empty handed sure looks pretty bad, so I said I found a quarter that I have had from lunch today, and I felt so much guult that I said wait a minute, this was from lunch.

So I will never do that again.

But still, it feels different taking something and saying "OMG OMG LOOK WHAT I FOUND GUYS, LOOK!!!!!"

So ya people do it, but I doubt it is anyone from this forum.

I wont call any names, or recall instances. But the few are obvious.
