New show Dig Wars, premiers this Wednesday June 12th at 9pm central time on the Travel Channel

You guys have been practicing that drama for years now. I have seen the videos.

hahaha:laughing:---yeah they will show local beach detectors and will throw a snow white tourists on the beach and tell them to go detect in the new cut out--and tojust leave holes open and the tide will cover them---:laughing:

What a joke!
I was really looking forward to a show that showed how things really are but instead we get the pawn stars of meal detecting.
I am disapointed in the whole crew.
They know what our hobby is up against and they sold us out for profit.
What a shame...

Very Disappointing

Dig Wars?

I have DirecTV, I get the Travel Channel, I set my DVR to record the Primer show according to my programing guide does not begin until 6-19-2013 what gives. I look at the travel channel web site and it says it started on 6-12-2013
Am I missing something or is it being shown on the internet or Netflix? :?:

At one point I said to myself "OH NO! Everyone is going to buy dectectors now and absorb ALL the old coins and relics!"

Then, after watching 10 mins of the show, I said to myself:

"this show is so retarded i think it will stop people from buying detectors"

Thank you Dig Wars

I would have been much happier if they would have put this up at the beginning.

#1 I will respect private property and will not metal detect without the property owner's permission.

#2 I will not destroy property, buildings or what is left of ghost towns and deserted structures.

#3 I will not litter, always pack out what I take in and remove all trash found.

#4 I will leave all gates and other accesses to land as found.

#5 I will not damage natural resources, wildlife habitats, or any private property.

#6 I will use thoughtfulness, consideration and courtesy at all times.

#7 I will abide by all laws, ordinances or regulations that may govern my search, or the area I will be in.

#8 I will fill all holes, regardless how remote the location, and never dig in a way that will damage, be damaging to, or kill any vegetation.

#9 I will report the discovery of items of significant historical value to a local historian or museum in accordance with the latest legislation.

#10 I will be an ambassador for the metal detecting hobby.

Be polite and informative to those who inquire about your hobby - you are the ambassador of a pastime we want to protect and we will be judged by how you act & respond

Watched the first episode not sure I will watch the next have it taped and set to tape the rest but after the first show makes no difference Why does it all come down to value I was hoping this show would be more professionaly done with the certain people in it Like Larry Cissna . Jeez Larry I really Like the website you have but after watching the show Not sure it is a good sign or Publicity for the Hobby How about lets hear from all the people on the show ,comments and such as to how all feel that have posted on here about your show if none are posted I guess we will have each and everyones answer that are on the show. How about it Ron , Larry , Abby and ETC post some comments on here and Start another thread would be interested in your Comments about some of the comments about your show cause trust me it could determine how long this show is aired!!!!!!

Nice show Ron and the rest of the crew! I learned something watching the show. I like all the show's,ya got to give them all credit for finding such awesome places to hunt ( getting permission ) and showing us what is found. Nice editing for a ½ hr. spot. You filled it well. ....HH....401K

I guess I'm in the minority because nobody has anything nice to say about the show. I liked it. I didn't love it, but it's another reality show. They are all scripted and cheesy. No reality show out there is actually real. Nobody would watch a bunch of guys digging pounds of trash while sweating in the heat coming home with nothing worth anything. If it was real, every fifth show would show a couple good finds but the other four would be boring as hell. Storage wars, pawn stars, you name it. All of it is for entertainment.

I thought the zincoln penny drop was funny. The appraisals didn't seem far fetched like American diggers. They never said they sold anything, the appraisal was only to determine a winner. The finds didn't seem planted. Nothing crazy or unbelievable was found.
All in all, I thought it was fun to watch. Learned nothing, but was entertained and that was what I turn on reality shows for.
Take the show for what it is and relax.
Just my humble non-judgmental opinion. :)

Well agreed, a Disapointment

from a number of vantage points. I share your criticisms and was horrified that the show was:

- filmed in spots the average detectorist has no legal access to
- The goal was defined as "how much intrinsic value can be removed" and were the sole arbiters of success.

I didn't see any holes being filled back/plugs replaced nor was the positive side of our hobby given any visibility what so ever. The negative take away IRT public perception was, IMHO huge.

I can see a lot of detectors being sold as a result of this program. I can also see newbies taking those detectors to say... the Petersburg National Battlefield and coming back with empty bags and a load of trouble.

How about the live shells being dug in the first episode. "I can see the fuse in the end, this things live" yet 2 of the teams removed a canon ball and 100lb Parrott shell, respectively. When did relic retrieval trump personal safety?

The first 2 episodes of this program were based on greed and irresponsibility.

RK

Dig Wars was a huge disappointment.
This show intimated that anyone can simply hop in a boat and motor on over to Fort St. Philip (declared a national historic landmark in 1960) and start filling their pockets with all the hi$tory they can haul out of there.

This show is a disgrace to our hobby.

I was VERY disappointed in Dig Wars. Would rather watch the show Diggers 10-1 to be completely honest. Carrying shovels around for digging does not set a very good example. Also seen a bit of footage that they forgot to edit out. It was the girl kicking in somebody's giant plug they dug and left. New from the beginning it was going to be terrible.

Comments (I only watched the first one):

1. Scripted, or forced, on conversation. Not unexpected from "reality" tv.
2. Why detecting was allowed at this site? You've just encouraged every yahoo who saw the show to go dig up off limit battlefields, etc.
3. Shovels for digging. I get it for the site and relic hunting, but no explanation of WHY using shovels over hand trowels that day? Instead, I guess it's more productive to do the whole "afraid of water" and "Piranha 3D" schtick.
4. Live ordinances and all that go with that. I think everyone else has beat on that already.
5. The money lines. Great for attracting viewers of the show, bad for the hobby.
6. I'm ASSUMING here that this is following the whole "Storage Wars" angle and appears to be with salted finds and then over-priced appraisals of objects / coins / relics, probably some of which come from the shops doing the "appraisals". Might be great for building viewership, but again, bad for the hobby.

For those who don't think this will further encourage people to enter the hobby that will continue to do things wrong, I think you're sadly mistaken.

I see it for what it is. A reality show. Will I watch it again...probably, mainly for the reason that there is nothing else on at that time. But what I am guessing is this. Detector sales will go up with everyone's intentions of getting rich. And after reality sets in to them about it not being a 1/2 hour treasure feast, the detector will sit in the garage or basement and start collecting dust and then they will try to sell them for what they bought it for.

Lots of shows have a disclaimer at the beginning... MythBusters comes back from EVERY break with a "don't try this at home" disclaimer. Pawn Stars rolls in and out of breaks with trivia.

All they need to make this show better is a few things:

- a little bit of the code of ethics, even if it's just some pop up text during the action of the show... or a disclaimer at the beginning or coming in and out of commercial breaks. "The producers got permission from the xxx historical society to allow detecting and filming on these grounds, which are usually off-limits to metal detecting.. Always get permission before metal detecting" yada yada throw it up on the screen for a few seconds.. PLEASE

- just a few seconds of hole filling and tamping... cut out a few seconds of the BS dialogue and detectorists talking to the camera (in that way over-acting voice) and now you have room for some hole filling

- at least add a few seconds at the end of the program showing all the trash that was dug. Heck, they could even make it part of the competition and weigh the trash that each team dug up. The team that dug the most trash gains/loses points however they want to play it

Just those little things would help the program - and the hobby - a lot!

Great post HighFlyer!

Beyond simply ending the show. Those are good suggestions, with included solutions...
