Garrett Pro pointer is a hunk of junk! I'm sick of it. (UPDATE: ordered vibra 580)

How long does the warranty last on these units? Mine just came in the mail today. So far I feel it is a major upgrade to my fisher pin pointer. With the fisher you almost have to be touching the item in order to get a beep from it. I hope mine lasts more than a few months.....

Wow, a very interesting & enjoyable thread guys. I've been sitting here with a great cup of coffee by my side slowing reading all the messages & great tips & info from everyone. I've often wondered why you don't hear much about the DetectorPro pistol probe? Some guys complain that it gets too much depth!! Other people say because it has such incredible depth it helps them to pinpoint their targets in many cases before digging the initial hole. Maybe, it has reliability issues? I have no clue, just wondering why no one ever seems to even talk about it.

I figure a 2 year warranty. That's 24 months @ $5.31 a month = $127.45 (cost of a new Garrett Propointer).
Not too bad for a Garrett Propointer.
Of course it cost almost $10.00 UPS to ship it back to Garrett for repair.
I still like it when it works. :pullhair:
Good luck with yours.
Bobby

I had one I got on a deal with a detector pkg purchase....First thing I saw when I opened up the control box was a "made in China" sticker....turned it on and saw too many controls just to pinpoint with....looks like a kids toy......not worth the money they sell for......JMHO. of course...
Propointer is alot better...

Yes, the Pistol Probe can precisely locate the target for you so that your hole can be very small. It's not so good once the hole is dug because it has so much range. I use a modified Centec for that. Dummy that I am, I broke the probe off of it. I'll be sending it back for repair. That was my fault. It is a bit larger and heavier than most others.

Had mine for a month and already having depth problems .....nearly have to be touching target:mad:

I keep hearing these problems with the switches on the propointer. I've always used vibraprobe and only had to replace it once in 12 years of detecting because I really jam the tip into the ground and eventually the plastic wore away and exposed the wires in the tip. I'm not at all easy on my pinpointer yet my vibraprobe still holds up to the abuse. No switches to break and it's completely waterproof. You shouldn't have to bang your pinpointer to get it to work.

I too have had trouble with the PP right out of the box. It goes off if I put any pressure on it, it will beep laying beside the hole till I restart it. Just little troubles that are a pain.

Vibraprobe. Ive had it for over ten years and if I can't break it, it's pretty darn solid. I about use the thing for a pry bar half the time. No issues yet. Great product.

I have the Fisher Pin Pointer,(It came with my F-2,which is in for repairs with less than 2 hours on it.:() and so far it works well.detects to about 3/4" to 1 " from it's target. I know everyone swears by the Garrett Pro pointer, but has anyone used the AutoMax V4 ? would like to hear HONEST,unbiased comments and reviews. Thanks !:)

I am getting an X-1 tomorrow.

I find myself carrying the X-1 and the Proppointer, and using one then the other. With the bad soil auto sens stays around 18, and the Propointer has greater depth, until you switch to a manual 25+. If I want to find a coin quickly and I do not think there is a nail in the hole, I grab the propointer and narrow down the side of the hole quicker. The X-1 seems to be too sensitive to do that, without adjusting the sensitivity.

It seems like the propointer is more sensitive and less sensitive at the same time. I am learning to switch to autosens when I want the x-1 to be less sensitive. I don't really want to switch to pinpoint mode.

Maybe Garrett should do something about the switches they use in the Propointer. Or maybe they can't because the components are not made by them. I suspect they are imported parts & a design flaw. Hope to get mine back soon from repair at Garrett. Been gone now for 2 weeks. Oh well, they probably have a lot to repair. Just toss it & send me a new one.
