Parts arrived this AM, and I had the Compadre pretty much prepped for mods so things went pretty well.
I had hoped I would be able to place the new disc switch under the control box, as opposed to in the faceplate. There's already a hole from the factory under the control box, so it was simply a matter of "squaring" the round/existing hole for the switch to fit. There is no through-hole (for the toggle), so that will need drilled, just be sure to center it in the existing switch hole prior to squaring the opening, it will just make it a little easier to locate.
Minimal material is removed, so there's no problem with weakening the handle.
While waiting on parts, I added a volume control (left corner) for the internal speaker. I did this in the event I was instructing a newcomer to detecting, the volume could be controlled. plus I may just want to not wear 'phones sometime.
I'll stress to just be gentle when you're into the wiring, don't stretch/stress is to an extreme, just use caution.
I cut the white wire (from board to disc pot) and added to each end, as opposed to unsoldering/resoldering to the board or disc pot. The loose ends are poking up in the air.
Made connections per diagram to the disc pot.
And reinstalled the disc pot back into faceplate. Don't forget to reinstall the grounding ring back onto the shaft threads. I also have always added a small rummer O-ring under the control knobs, this way it adds a little tension to prevent knobs from accidentally being bumped out of adjustment.
Ground ring slipped back over disc pot.
Use extreme caution when drilling a hole for the switch wiring, if you choose to go the handle mounted route. Drill directly above the hole for the switch.
Took me a bit to adjust trimmers, you really have to screw them in several turns to start with, at least I did with these particular ones.
I placed the switch in a direction which I "pull" for "pull"tabs, and push for Zinc Pennies. I adjusted Nickle trimmer to completely eliminate tabs, and the Zinc trimmer to eliminate Zinc Pennies. I did check with a couple Wheat Pennies, and it hit on them just fine with the trigger pushed.
Pretty cool mod, thanks for those who share this sort of thing for those of us who can't seem to leave well-enough alone
Also, in the pic below, on the back side of the handle you can see the Switchcraft filling I added long ago to allow me to swap coils with my DeLeon.
